| December 20, 2010 11:16 AM

Arthur W. Hedge, 98, of Post Falls, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010. Affectionately known as "Uncle Art" to family and friends alike, he was an inspiration to all who knew him. Art was born on Dec. 2, 1912, in Regent, N.D., to William and Nettie (Burwick) Hedge.

Following high school, he enrolled in college and graduated in 1936 from Dickinson State University and later earned his master's degree from the University of Montana in Missoula. In 2002, Art became the proud recipient of the Golden Hawk Award, the highest recognition presented to alumni of Dickinson State.

During World War II, Art proudly served four years in the U.S. Army as a war photographer; and much of his time was spent filming government documentaries in China, India and Tibet.

Besides film and photography, Art's passion was education. He taught at Coeur d'Alene High School in the 1950s, later traveling to California to teach, and returning to University of Montana Western in Dillon until his retirement.

Art was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Leona Krank and Evelyn Massad; and his brothers, Ralph, Lowell, Maynard and Warren.

He is survived by his nephew, Edward (Joanie) Hedge and many loving nieces and nephews.

Uncle Art's family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to Coeur d'Alene Homes, Hospice of North Idaho and the volunteers of NOSDA in Coeur d'Alene.

If desired, memorials may be made to Coeur d'Alene Homes, Hospice of North Idaho or his beloved Dickinson State University. English Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements, as Art's memorial will be held at a later date in Dickinson, N.D.
