Holbrook leads Spartans to Newport title

NEWPORT, Wash. - Eric Holbrook ended his night in the third quarter just an assist shy of a triple-double with 30 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists, and Priest River easily defeated Newport 86-61 in the championship game of the Newport holiday tournament Saturday.

Jaden Barrett helped out with 16 points for the (3-1) Spartans, who host Freeman on Tuesday.

Jake Wiley scored 19 to go along with seven rebounds and five blocked shots for Newport (4-4).

Kellogg 56, Timberlake 50: Ryan McDonald had 11 points, five rebounds and three assists for the host Tigers, who built a 32-16 halftime lead in the Intermountain League clash at Andrews Gymnasium.

"We lost intensity in the second half (on defense)," Kellogg coach Jeff Lambert said. "We can play better than that."

Brian Cronnelly scored 25 points for Timberlake (0-7, 0-2), which plays host to Newport on Tuesday.

Kellogg (6-2, 2-0) plays Coeur d'Alene Charter in the first round of a holiday tournament Dec. 28 in Kellogg.

Coeur d'Alene 61, Mt. Tahoma 52: Deon Watson scored 19 points and held Idaho signee Xavier Bazile to 10 as the Vikings finished 2-1 on their road trip with the nonleague win in Tacoma, Wash.

Bazile scored 32 on Friday night for Mt. Tahoma, which beat Lincoln of Tacoma by 17 earlier in the season. Lincoln edged Coeur d'Alene by four points Thursday night.

"I think it was a big win for our basketball team," Coeur d'Alene coach Kent Leiss said. "I told Deon, you're going to be a college player someday, so you might as well go out and do a number on him."

Chad Chalich added 16 points for Coeur d'Alene, which trailed 15-9 before switching to a zone defense.

The Vikings return to action Dec. 28 vs. Priest River at the Coeur d'Alene Holiday Inn Express Tournamant at North Idaho College.

West Valley 70, Sandpoint 44: West Valley guard Brady Bagby dropped in a game-high 23 points to lead the Eagles over the host Bulldogs at Les Rogers Court.

Cole Fuhrman and Blaine Shultz combined for 20 points and Jacob Carothers added six points and six boards for the Bulldogs (4-3), who kept the game within striking distance until the fourth quarter.

"We knew we'd have an idea of where we're at," Sandpoint coach Tyler Haynes said. "You're either going up, or you're going down, and we're going up."

Sandpoint is at East Valley in a makeup game on Dec. 30.

Maggie Kirscher tallied 10 points and three assists, freshman Hailey Olin five points, six boards and three dimes, and Natasha Roop grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in defeat for the Bulldogs (4-7), who trailed by only six points at half against one of the top 2A teams in Washington.

"They have two all-state post players," Sandpoint coach Lance Bruce of Nilles and Love. "West Valley had 17 offensive rebounds, and that just wears us out."

The Bulldogs host Bonners Ferry in a makeup game on Jan. 3.

Marah Ashcraft had 18 points and five rebounds for Kellogg (3-6, 0-2 IML), and Lauren Cooper had seven points and nine rebounds.

"I'm very excited with how my team played; we got Timberlake a little flustered," Kellogg coach Patricia Hoeck said.

Timberlake (7-3, 2-0) plays host to Newport on Tuesday.

Kellogg hosts a holiday tournament Dec. 28-29.
