Prairie Pig spirit games

tonight at Post Falls

POST FALLS - Lakeland and Post Falls high schools meet for the 15th annual Prairie Pig spirit event/basketball doubleheader tonight at The Arena.

The girls game is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m., followed by the boys game around 7:30.

Last year in Rathdrum, Lakeland won the Pig, awarded to the school judged to have shown the most spirit, for the ninth time in 14 tries.

Former Lakeland standout to play

for NAIA football championship

ROME, Ga. - Top-ranked Sioux Falls (13-0) will face second-ranked Carroll College (13-0) for the NAIA football championship on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. PST.

Former Lakeland High standout Bubba Bartlett will start at tight end for Carroll in the game, televised nationally on the CBS College Sports Network.

The last time these teams played was the 2008 national championship, when Sioux Falls won 23-7.

Carroll is playing in the championship game for the seventh time since 2002.

Cougars sign two

junior college linemen

PULLMAN - Offensive linemen Rico Forbes and Taylor Meighen have each signed a national letter of intent to play football at Washington State, coach Paul Wulff announced.

Both are expected to enroll in class for the spring semester, beginning Jan. 10.

Forbes (6-foot-4, 260 pounds) has spent the past two seasons at Navarro College in Corsicana, Texas. He originally signed a letter of intent with Baylor in Feb. 2009 before attending Navarro. In 2010, he helped Navarro to an 11-1 record and the NJCAA championship.

Meighan (6-3, 285) has played the last two seasons at Kilgore College in Kilgore, Texas. Meighen earned 2010 All-Southwest Junior College Football Conference first-team honors at center.

Chiefs' Cowen to represent Canada

at world junior tournament

Spokane Chiefs captain Jared Cowen has been named to Team Canada's roster for the 2011 World Junior Hockey Championship.

He will represent his home country for the second straight tournament after winning a silver medal last year.

The 2011 IIHF World Championship will take place in Buffalo, N.Y., from Dec. 26 through Jan. 5.
