Chalich named 5A player of the year

Chad Chalich had a pretty good first season as the starting quarterback at Coeur d'Alene High.

In November, the 6-foot-1, 180-pound junior led the Vikings to their first state football championship since 1985.

And on Sunday, he was named the state 5A player of the year by The Idaho Statesman newspaper of Boise, which compiles the All-Idaho high school football team.

Chalich set single-season school records in total offense (3,385 yards), passing yards (2,844), completions (209) and touchdown passes (32) for the 11-1 Vikings.

He was joined on the 5A first team by Coeur d'Alene teammates Zach Keiser (running back), Drew Moreno and Shaun Duffy (linemen) and Jake Matheson (defensive back). All are seniors.

Matheson also made the 5A second team at wide receiver. He was joined on the second team by teammates Drew Turbin (wide receiver), Max Noll and Deon Watson (defensive linemen) and Joe Roletto and Matt Lambert (defensive back).

Lake City had three second-team selections - offensive linemen Adrian Sherman and Mike Wanless, and linebacker Brian Griswold.

Dillon Lukehart of Eagle, who has verbally committed to play at Idaho next year, was a first-team selection at running back and defensive back.

In 3A, Timberlake junior defensive back Devin Smith was named to the first team. He was joined on the first team by senior defensive back Taylor Tompke of Bonners Ferry and junior punter Ryne Stull of Kellogg.

Named to the 3A second team were St. Maries quarterback Brad Anderson, Timberlake running back Christian Heth and Bonners Ferry linebacker Ozzie Braff.
