Kellogg holds off Lakeland

BOYS BASKETBALL

RATHDRUM - Eric Fields made a 3-point basket with a minute to play to put Kellogg up by one, and the 3A Wildcats went on to edge the 4A Lakeland Hawks 52-47 in nonleague play Thursday night at Hawk Court.

Fields added a free throw moments later, then Hayden Garner stole the ball and scored for more breathing room for the Wildcats.

Tyler Morgan had 16 points and nine rebounds for Kellogg (3-2), which opens Intermountain League play Saturday at home vs. Bonners Ferry. Fields finished with 11 points for the Wildcats, who led 27-13 at halftime.

"We played fairly well again," Kellogg coach Jeff Lambert said. "Our turnovers were down, so we're starting to figure things out. It was a huge win for us."

Daniel Whitesitt had 15 points, Eric Cooper 12 for Lakeland (0-2), which travels to Moscow on Saturday to open 4A Inland Empire League play.

Shawn Thompson had 13 points and 11 rebounds for North Idaho Christian (1-3, 1-2 MCL), which travels to Upper Columbia Academy in Spangle, Wash., on Thursday. Sebastian Jara had 13 points for the Royals and Cory LaFollett had six steals.

PLUMMER - Sophomore Shannon Miller scored 12 of her 16 points in the first half for the host Knights in the nonleague win over the Royals.

Miller finished 8 of 16 from the floor for Lakeside (5-1). Tah-Wy-Ah Davis added 11 points for the Knights, who play Coeur d'Alene Charter on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Holy Family Catholic School.

"Tonight it was mainly a team defensive thing," Lakeside coach Ron Miller said. "We played really good defense all night long. Every girl played, and they played outstanding defense."

North Idaho Christian (2-3) returns to action next Friday vs. Christian Heritage at Canfield Middle School.

COEUR d'ALENE - Dakota Schnall (152) and Justis Ballison (160) picked up wins to help the Timberwolves regain the momentum in a win over the Eagles in their season opener.

"It was a great way to open the season," Lake City coach Corey Owen said. "Anytime you can open the season with a win, it's a good start."

Jared Lambert (135), Nate Partenfelder (145) and Jacob Benson (285) also picked up wins for Lake City, which travels to the St. Maries tournament today.
