Hawk girls win 4A IEL opener

| December 8, 2010 8:00 PM

SANDPOINT - Neena Buchman scored 14 points and Cieana Close added 11 to lead Lakeland to a 41-26 win over Sandpoint in 4A Inland Empire League play Tuesday night at Les Rogers Court.

The Hawks (2-4, 1-0 4A IEL) employed a full-court press that gave the Bulldogs fits, causing 33 turnovers and leading to a lot of easy baskets.

"Our first half was really good," Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said. "The first three or four minutes of the game weren't, but I thought we played real solid man-to-man defense and did a real good job with ball pressure."

Darby Murray had seven steals for Lakeland.

"Darby did a great job defensively," Seymour said. "She was one of the big keys for the game and forced a lot of turnovers. When she wasn't stealing the ball, she was forcing other turnovers to get us the ball. She played great."

Maggie Kirscher had 14 points, 14 rebounds and four steals for Sandpoint (1-5, 0-2 4A IEL).

Lakeland travels to Moscow on Saturday.
