Art is in the mind's eye

Dian Burrell isn't so much impressed that her Coeur d'Alene friend DeLaine Mardell won first prize in two categories at the North Idaho Fair and Rodeo for an afghan she made.

Burrell is more impressed that her friend accomplished this as a blind woman.

"You wonder, 'How in the world could a blind lady do this?'" Burrell said of her friend. "But she's basically a nice, average, well-rounded person. She has interests and she's very intelligent."

Although Mardell has been blind since youth, she tells Burrell that she still imagines the designs of her creations in her mind.

"She still knows colors," Burrell said. "One time she said, 'I can't quite picture the difference between teal and turquoise.' In her mind, she can see things." - Alecia Warren
