Firefighters get relief

BOISE (AP) - Fire officials said cooler weather Sunday helped firefighters battling blazes at high elevations in the central part of the state as well as firefighters at lower elevations in southern Idaho.

Fire spokesman Sheldon Keafer said snow fell on the Hurd fire Sunday morning where it had been burning at about 8,000 feet. That fire in subalpine fir, lodgepole pine and Douglas fir about eight miles northwest of Cascade was 33 percent contained and has scorched about 1,300 acres, or two square miles.

Meanwhile, the 54-square-mile Long Butte about four miles west of Hagerman was expected to be contained during the evening hours on Sunday.

Fire spokeswoman Susan Marzec said cooler weather has been helping with that blaze as well as a number of smaller fires in the region.
