Viks notch 'great' win at Sandpoint

| August 29, 2010 9:00 PM

SANDPOINT — Caelyn Orlandi and Whitney Wood both scored second-half goals, and keeper Christine Woeller came up with a couple big saves late in the game to lead Coeur d’Alene to a 2-1 win over Sandpoint on Saturday at Centennial Field.

“A great win over a great program,” said a happy Vikings coach Tarragh Carr.

Meghan Pagano got Sandpoint (0-1-2) on the board with an equalizer in the 64th minute, finally finding the back of the net after narrowly missing a couple of great chances earlier.

Wood scored the game winner for the Vikings (3-0) off a high, looping direct kick from more than 30 yards out that slipped just inside the far post. Clinging to a 2-1 lead, Woeller made arguably the biggest play of the game when she dove to get a hand on a pointblank breakaway shot by Pagano, deflecting the sure goal just over the crossbar.

“Despite the score, I was very impressed with the girls,” said first-year Sandpoint coach Julie Pitre.
