Lumberjacks second at Lewiston tourney

LEWISTON - St. Maries opened its season with four straight wins before falling in the championship match for a second-place finish at the Lewiston Invitational on Saturday.

In pool play, the Lumberjacks defeated Lewiston JV 25,10, 25-16; Troy 25-17, 25-7 and Moscow 25-11, 25-15. After defeating Genessee 19-25, 25-13, 15-9 in the semifinals, the 3A Lumberjacks fell to 5A Lewiston 21-25, 25-19, 15-11.

"Our best game of the day was vs. Lewiston; we were able to play them much stronger than we did last year," St. Maries coach Missy Asbury said. "The girls played like it was a championship match and proved they're ready for the season. We started strong and finished strong."

Tia Asbury led St. Maries on the day with six aces and 68 digs, Jaylee Sines totaled 103 assists, Marlee Masterson topped the Lumberjacks with 68 digs and Mariah Gladden recorded 31 kills and eight blocks.

St. Maries plays at Lake City on Thursday.

Cd'A Charter

COEUR d'ALENE - Emily Verhaeghe had 11 kills for the Panthers in their season opener, a 25-12, 25-15, 25-2 loss to the visiting Maniacs in Central Idaho League play at Holy Family Catholic School.

"Orofino was a strong team," first-year Coeur d'Alene Charter coach Chris Smith said. "We had a lot of positives from the match, but Orofino brought their game, but we didn't get to show them ours. It was a good start to the season to play a stronger team."

Paige Kelly had eight kills and Brianna Marshall had five kills for Coeur d'Alene Charter, which hosts Wallace on Thursday.

Cd'A sweeps at Post Falls River Run

POST FALLS - Coeur d'Alene seniors David Norris and Kinsey Gomez each won individual titles in the Post Falls River Run at Kiwanis Park.

The Coeur d'Alene boys took the top seven places to win the boys team title. Coeur d'Alene edged Lake City by one point for the girls team title.

Rachel Ward placed second and Alia LaCroix third for Lake City in the three-team meet.

All three schools will compete in the Silverwood Coaster Cross on Sept. 11.
