Viks open season with split

COEUR d'ALENE - Kylie Curtis had 22 kills as the Coeur d'Alene Vikings began their season by splitting a pair of matches Friday, defeating Big Sky (Missoula) before falling to Sentinel (Missoula) at Elmer Jordan Court.

"I thought our girls played well today," Coeur d'Alene coach Carly Curtis said. "We kind of dominated Big Sky and were serving tough and came out well against Sentinel. That being our second match in a row, we kind of wore down against them. Sentinel is a good team and it was great to play them."

Maddy Seaman added six kills in a 26-24, 25-19, 25-23 win over Big Sky. Amy Norris and Alex Evans had six digs apiece for the Vikings, with three players each having six aces.

Morgan McCarthy had 14 kills and three blocks as Sentinel defeated Coeur d'Alene 25-20, 16-25, 16-25, 25-23, 15-12.

Ashley Hammons had 21 assists and Maddy Seaman had seven aces and four blocks for Coeur d'Alene (1-1), which travels to the Mariner Invitational next Saturday in Everett, Wash.

Timberlake takes two at tri-match

RATHDRUM - Timberlake got its season out to a strong start, defeating the Lakeland Hawks 14-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-19 and Bonners Ferry Badgers 25-19, 25-11, 25-15 in nonleague action at Lakeland High.

Jenny Munson had five kills for Timberlake against Bonners Ferry.

"I thought we played well as a team," Timberlake coach Michelle Garwood said. "We hung in there, served the ball well. We had some good teamwork today."

Brooke Murray had 12 assists for Timberlake and Marcayle Acord had seven kills for the Badgers.

Ivy Dirks had 14 assists and Olivia Langs had eight digs for Bonners Ferry against Lakeland.

Sharon Gardner had seven kills, Sonora Wilkes 22 assists and Erin Odgen 15 digs for the Hawks.

In its second match of the day, Timberlake defeated Lakeland 14-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-19.

"We're kind of inexperienced and had some unforced errors," Lakeland assistant coach Tarra Anderson said.

Kelly Madsen had eight kills and Murray had 21 assists and five aces for the Tigers (2-0), who travel to Clark Fork on Sept. 8.

Kaitlyn Whitesitt had seven kills and three blocks and Wilkes had 19 assists and seven aces for the Hawks (0-2), who travel to Post Falls on Tuesday to face the Trojans and Priest River in a tri-match.

George, Timberlake

girls triumph

BONNERS FERRY - Timberlake freshman Ashly George won the girls race in 22 minutes, 10 seconds to lead the Tigers to the team title at the season-opening Bonners Ferry Invitational.

Dominique Vanderwilt placed fourth, Kelsey McCaslin fifth for Timberlake.

Sandpoint won the boys title.
