Viks begin season running away from Bears

| August 28, 2010 9:00 PM

MOSCOW - Senior tailback Zach Keiser had 107 yards on 14 carries for three touchdowns as the Coeur d'Alene Vikings defeated the Moscow Bears 42-19 in the nonleague opener for both schools on Friday night at Moscow Junior High.

"Zach had a very good game," Coeur d'Alene coach Shawn Amos said. "We kind of expect him to have nights like this for us. He played the first half or so, but we'll expect that from him every night."

Keiser scored on runs of 25, 10 and 5 yards as the Vikings built a 36-0 halftime lead.

Viking junior Chad Chalich completed 11 of 20 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns and also ran for 28 yards on seven carries.

"It was a very good start for Chad," Amos said. "At first, he was a little shaky and nervous, but got more comfortable as the night progressed."

Deon Watson sacked Moscow senior quarterback Jake Helbling three times for the Vikings, who didn't allow a first down in the first half.

"Deon had a breakout game for us tonight," Amos said. "On defense, we're looking for a lot of guys to contribute this year. We saw a lot of that tonight and saw some guys make plays on both offense and defense. We've got a lot of good players that can make plays this season."

"Our defense was swarming tonight," Coeur d'Alene assistant coach John House Sr. said. "It just was stifling."

Coeur d’Alene hosts Moses Lake in its home opener at Viking Stadium next Friday.

GRANGEVILLE — Bulldogs tailback Justin Robie’s 3-yard touchdown run with just over 5 minutes remaining in the third quarter proved to be the difference in the nonleague season-opening win over the Lumberjacks.

“It was kind of a typical first game,” first-year St. Maries coach Craig Tefft said. “We had a lot of penalties that kind of proved to be the difference. We just had too many self-inflicted wounds.”

St. Maries returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, but had it called back due to a taunting penalty.

Jaden Guidry scored on a 1-yard run to give the Lumberjacks a 7-6 lead in the second quarter.
