Baseball

Officials at the federal courthouse in Washington said that seven-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens will be arraigned Monday afternoon on criminal charges.

The former pitcher will appear before U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton for allegedly lying to Congress about his use of steroids.

The six-count indictment alleges that Clemens obstructed a congressional inquiry with 15 different statements made under oath, including denials that he had ever used steroids or human growth hormone.

Clemens had been prominently mentioned in the Mitchell report, Major League Baseball’s own accounting of its steroid problem, and he went to Capitol Hill on his own to clear his name. He appeared at a congressional hearing in February 2008, along with Brian McNamee, his former trainer.

McNamee, who had cooperated with Mitchell’s investigation, testified that he had injected Clemens, while Clemens steadfastly denied using steroids or HGH.

Clemens faces a combined maximum sentence of 30 years in prison and a $1.5 million fine, though under U.S. sentencing guidelines, the recommended range of time is between 15 and 21 months.

Football

Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt said he will start Derek Anderson on Saturday night when the Cardinals visit the Chicago Bears for their third preseason game.

Packers 59, Colts 24: Aaron Rodgers extended his sharp start to the preseason, throwing for 195 yards and three touchdowns in the first half of Green Bay’s (2-1) win over visiting Indianapolis (0-3).

Rams 36, Patriots 35: Sam Bradford passed his first test as a starting quarterback in the NFL.

And the player who ended the game at that position for the Rams (2-1), Keith Null, directed a drive that set up Josh Brown’s 37-yard field goal on the final play that gave St. Louis an exhibition win over New England at Foxborough, Mass.

Bradford, the top pick in this year’s draft, was poised and precise in playing the first half. He went 15 for 22 for 189 yards after struggling as a backup in his first two games. But Tom Brady threw touchdown passes on three consecutive drives and the Patriots (2-1) turned a 27-14 deficit into a 35-27 lead.

Basketball

Nenad Krstic of the Oklahoma City Thunder was suspended for Serbia’s next three games for throwing a chair during last week’s brawl with Greece.

Basketball’s governing body said that three other players will miss two games. FIBA also fined both national federations.

Danny Ferry is returning to the San Antonio Spurs.

The former general manager for the Cavaliers will be vice president of basketball operations for the Spurs. He will be reunited with coach Gregg Popovich and general manager R.C. Buford after leaving for Cleveland in 2005.

Ferry led the Cavs through the most successful period in their history. But he left after five years in Cleveland, about a month before LeBron James took off for Miami.

Tennis

If Roger Federer is going to reach a seventh consecutive U.S. Open title match, he might need to get past the man who ended his Grand Slam semifinal streak.

Five-time U.S. Open champion Federer was given a possible quarterfinal match against two-time French Open runner-up Robin Soderling in the draw for the tournament, which begins Monday. The No. 5-seeded Soderling upset Federer in the quarterfinals in Paris this year, stopping Federer’s record run of reaching at least the semifinals at 23 consecutive Grand Slam tournaments.

The top-seeded woman, 2009 runner-up Caroline Wozniacki, could face 2006 champion Maria Sharapova in the fourth round and 2004 champion Svetlana Kuznetsova in the quarterfinals.
