Girl Scouts receive generous gift of $1.7 million

Pam Lund, chief executive officer of Girl Scouts of Eastern Washington and North Idaho, said a gift of $1.7 million was received from Ed and Beatriz Schweitzer, founders of Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories in Pullman, Wash.

The donation will fund the building of a new lodge facility at Camp Four Echoes.

"The lodge will provide a dynamic resource that will promote engaging in experiences that will enrich the learning process for girls of all ages," said Ed and Beatriz Schweitzer.

For 70 years the current Girl Scouts Camp Four Echoes lodge, located on Lake Coeur d'Alene, has been serving girls ages 5 to 17.

The lodge was originally built by the Spokane Lions Club in 1940 and has had multiple additions in order to continue serving the increasing volume of girls enrolled in Girl Scout camp activities. Camp Four Echoes is a destination campground for Girl Scouts both nationally and internationally.

In addition, the gift supports Girl Scout programs in science, technology, engineering and math to provide young women a lens to see what careers might be available to them in the future.

"The generosity of the Schweitzers' gift will make our Girl Scout program vision a reality for girls in every community, large and small, throughout Eastern Washington and the Panhandle of North Idaho," Lund said.

Governor's Cup comes to Cd'A

Time to golf for a good cause.

Coeur d'Alene is hosting the 2010 Idaho Governor's Cup this year, with a golf tournament and other sporting events going on through the weekend to raise funds for Idaho students.

Thursday's events included practice rounds for golf at The Coeur d'Alene Resort course and the Circling Raven Golf Club. Practice for shotgun sports were scheduled at the Coeur d'Alene Trap and Skeet Club.

A golf tournament, fly fishing and shotgun sports will take place at those locations today and Saturday.

The events are only open for those who have already registered, said event Executive Director Katie Hammon.

Most of the funds raised this year have been from sponsor groups, she said.

"We already blew our goal out of the water," Hammon said. "Knowing the economic hard times everywhere, we were just trying to get over $800,000, but we're currently at $830,000."

Proceeds will go toward scholarships for Idaho high school graduates attending colleges in the state.
