Press fall sports special

section comes out Thursday

Local high school football, volleyball, soccer, cross country and swimming teams, as well as North Idaho College's volleyball and soccer squads, will be previewed in the Press' annual fall sports special section in Thursday's newspaper.

Shock to host

championship rally today

SPOKANE - The Spokane Shock announced they will host a championship rally today at 6 p.m. at the Spokane Arena.

In their inaugural season in the Arena Football League, the Shock captured the ArenaBowl title after beating the Tampa Bay Storm 69-57 last Friday at home.

Members of the 2010 championship team will be in attendance along with coaches and members of the front office. The ArenaBowl trophy will also be on display for fans to take pictures.

"This has been an unbelievable season," Shock coach Rob Keefe said. "Our fans have shown us so much support all season long; we just wanted to thank them one more time before we start getting ready to defend our title."

Additionally, the Shock will have merchandise - including ArenaBowl championship merchandise - for sale.

Rolly Williams Classic

set for Oct. 1

COEUR d'ALENE - The fourth annual Rolly Williams Classic golf tournament will be held on Friday, Oct. 1 at Avondale Golf Club.

Lunch will be served, followed by a four-person scramble with a shotgun start at 1 p.m.

Cost is $75 per person, or $300 per team.

The deadline for entry is Sept. 27.

Mathews wins ultra

weight pentathlon

SEATTLE - George Mathews of Hayden Lake won the men's 65-9 USA Track and Field Masters Northwest Region Ultra Weight Pentathlon Championship held at West Seattle Stadium on Aug. 21.

Mathews' best throws in each event were: 20-pound weight - 56 feet, 9 1/4 inches; 44-pound - 27-0; 56-pound - 20-6 1/2; 98-pound - 8-11; and 200-pound - 3-3 for a total of 3,659 age-graded points.

Shock receiver White

signs with UFL squad

Spokane Shock wide receiver Markee White has signed with the Hartford Colonials of the United Football League.

In last week's ArenaBowl victory over the Tampa Bay Storm, White was named the Offensive Player of the Game after he recorded a team-leading nine receptions for 99 yards with four touchdowns. White's second touchdown, in which he went up for the catch and was drilled over the sideboards, was named ESPN SportsCenter's top play of the day.

In only eight games during the regular season, White had 66 receptions for 925 yards with 18 touchdowns.

In two seasons with Spokane, White helped the Shock capture an ArenaCup title (2009) and an ArenaBowl championship (2010).

"I'm so proud of Markee; this is an excellent opportunity for him that he deserves. With his size and his speed, I know he will thrive in the outdoor game," Shock coach Rob Keefe said. "This is what it is all about; we want to win, have fun while we are doing it, and move our players to the next level."
