Idaho men's hoop schedule includes tourney at home

MOSCOW - The University of Idaho men's basketball team released its 2010-11 schedule on Monday with a slate that includes 12 home games and the first regular-season tournament in Moscow in 21 years.

The Vandals play three of their first five games on the road and all against Northwest rivals. Idaho opens the season against Eastern Oregon on Nov. 13, then renews the oldest continuous rivalry west of the Mississippi at Washington State on Nov. 16. Portland will visit Memorial Gym on Nov. 20 and the Vandals will finish out the month at Montana on the 22nd and Eastern Washington on the 27th.

Idaho hosts North Dakota, Monmouth and Eastern Michigan in the BTI Classic on Dec. 3-5 at Memorial Gym. It will mark the first regular-season tournament Idaho has hosted since the Palouse Classic in 1989-90.

The month of December includes trips to Seattle University and Oregon, as well as a home game against Montana. Western Athletic Conference play begins Dec. 29 and 31 with home games against New Mexico State and Louisiana Tech, respectively, at the Cowan Spectrum.

Key conference games at Cowan Spectrum will be Nevada on Jan. 12, Boise State on Jan. 22 in what will be a men's-women's rivalry doubleheader, and Utah State on Feb. 9.

The Vandals added non-conference games against Cal State Bakersfield on Jan. 15 and Seattle University on March 5 among the WAC schedule, as well as the Feb. 19 ESPNU BracketBuster game, which will be announced at a later date.

Chiefs open fall camp Thursday

SPOKANE - A total of 70 players will converge on the Spokane Arena this week with the hopes of earning a spot in the annual Red-White Scrimmage on Sunday afternoon. The Chiefs fall camp will begin with ice sessions on Thursday morning at the Spokane Arena.

Seventeen veterans off last year's playoff roster will be attending camp, including 20-year-olds James Reid, Tyler Johnson and Levko Koper.

Defenseman Jared Cowen, the Ottawa Senators' first round selection in 2009, will not be attending Chiefs camp as he is already with the NHL team preparing for their camp. Cowen is eligible to return to play in Spokane as a 19-year-old.

Also in town is 17-year-old Marek Kalus from the Czech Republic. The forward will join Dominik Uher, who returns for his second season in Spokane, as the two European players on Spokane's roster this season. Kalus was Spokane's first round selection, 49th overall, in this summer's CHL Import Draft.

Veterans check in at the Arena today. Rookies report and fitness testing takes place on Wednesday.

Scrimmages will take place Thursday-Saturday at 10:30 a.m., 1 and 3:30 p.m. All scrimmages will be free and open to the public.
