CdA covered in case of terrorist attack
Would terrorists —yes, terrorists, not tourists — eye Coeur d’Alene as a possible target?
Yes? No?
Would you put money on it one way or the other?
The city of Coeur d’Alene has, opting to include for at least the
second straight year insurance that would cover its assets in the
unlikely event of a Lake City terrorist attack. But the city’s urban
renewal agency, Lake City Development Corp., turned the same
opportunity down last week, declining to pick up the $5,000 premium
that would cover against covert strikes.
It’s the second straight year LCDC said no.
The offer was through LCDC's insurance provider ICRMP, and under the
Federal Terrorism Insurance Act, with up to $20 million in coverage.
But, although the calling card of terrorism attacks is surprise, the
board wasn’t willing to dish out the extra cash on an improbable
attack.
As LCDC Executive Director Tony Berns put it: “I don’t think we have
any concerns of terrorism at this time."
The city though, with its multi-million and counting wastewater
treatment plant loaded with chemicals on the shores of the Spokane River,
picked up the terrorist option in its coverage this year.
That $1,706 option under its provider, One Beacon America Insurance
Co., would pay for 85 percent of losses up to $100 billion, said Troy
Tymesen, finance director. - Tom Hasslinger
