Buchholz baffles Blue Jays

Clay Buchholz pitched six innings of five-hit ball to lower his AL-best ERA to 2.26 and Bill Hall hit a two-run homer for the host Boston Red Sox in a 5-0 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday.

Buchholz (15-5) extended his streak to 23 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run.

Shaun Marcum (11-7) retired Boston's first 12 batters. He left after seven innings, having given up three runs and four hits. He had six strikeouts without a walk.

Rays 3, Athletics 2: Matt Garza came out on top in a matchup between pitchers who threw no-hitters this season, outpitching Dallas Braden for his career-high 13th win and leading visiting Tampa Bay over Oakland.

Rangers 6, Orioles 4: Josh Hamilton and Vladimir Guerrero each hit three-run homers, Tommy Hunter earned his career-high 10th win and visiting Texas beat Baltimore to split the four-game series.

Royals 3, White Sox 2, 10 inn.: Jason Kendall hit a game-ending single with two outs in the 10th inning to give host Kansas City a victory over Chicago in the teams' third extra-inning game in less than 24 hours.

Tigers 8, Indians 1: Justin Verlander pitched eight strong innings, rookie Will Rhymes had four hits and host Detroit completed a three-game sweep of Cleveland.

Twins 4, Angels 0: At Minneapolis, Scott Baker pitched seven shutout innings, Michael Cuddyer had a bases-loaded double, and Minnesota beat Los Angeles.

Braves 16, Cubs 5: Omar Infante and Jason Heyward each hit a pair of home runs, and visiting Atlanta scored 11 times in the last three innings to break away and spoil Lou Piniella's last game as the Chicago manager.

Cardinals 9, Giants 0: Jaime Garcia threw a three-hitter for his first career shutout and fellow rookie Allen Craig hit a two-run home run to lift host St. Louis over San Francisco.

Phillies 6, Nationals 0: Roy Oswalt struck out eight in seven sharp innings and led host Philadelphia over Washington.

Reds 5, Dodgers 2: Bronson Arroyo earned his 100th career victory, Joey Votto homered and drove in three runs and visiting Cincinnati beat Los Angeles.

Astros 2, Marlins 1: At Miami, Hunter Pence hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning and Houston averted a series sweep by ending Florida's season-high five-game winning streak.

Padres 7, Brewers 3: Adrian Gonzalez and Chase Headley each homered in visiting San Diego's win over Milwaukee.

Pirates 2, Mets 1: Zach Duke limited visiting New York to one run over seven innings in Pittsburgh's win over the Mets.

Rockies 1, Diamondbacks 0: At Phoenix, Dexter Fowler hit a run-scoring single in the eighth inning and Jhoulys Chacin pitched 7 2/3 strong innings to lead Colorado over Arizona.
