FORESIGHT: Had it then, need it now

| August 22, 2010 10:00 PM

I would like to talk about foresight. The foresight that the residents of Kootenai County (about 25,000) had 40 years ago when they built a new Cd'A High School way north of downtown. When they then built Lake City High School and then Lakeland High School, way out there in little ole Rathdrum.

Foresight - vision/visionary.

Foresight - Can you imagine all that Highway 95 traffic on Government Way today? Government Way was Highway 95! There was no Ramsey Road or Prairie Avenue or all the alternative roads we see today.

Yes, we have NIC and the Workforce Training Center and they will still all work together. But if you and your children have applied to attend these facilities you have found out they cannot accept everyone who needs to attend.

We have four great high schools who graduate nearly 5,000 students each June. Close to half of them have to leave the area to find schooling, training or jobs, and they don't return. Is that what we want for each year's graduating classes?

Vote YES for the KTEC issue on the ballot. We do not have to buy the land - it has been donated! Yes, these are hard economic times and every dollar counts, but we must pass this now. If we wait a year or more the building and construction costs will also rise, making it more difficult to get the needed funding.
