Bulldogs, Vikings open with tie

| August 22, 2010 9:00 PM

SANDPOINT - Adam Borsheim netted a hat trick to lead Coeur d'Alene, and Tanner Williams scored twice and assisted on Shane Stanley's goal to lead Sandpoint, as the two Inland Empire League rivals battled to a 3-3 tie in season-opening action Saturday at Centennial Field.

Five of the six goals were scored in an explosive second half, as Borsheim was assisted by three different players to lead the Vikings as the lead bounced back and forth.

Williams was the focal point of the Sandpoint attack all game, and with the Bulldogs trailing 3-2 in the 71st minute, he broke free in front of the net and was taken out by hard-charging keeper Keegan Schillington. The Viking keeper was given a red card, and Williams slotted the ensuing penalty kick for the final equalizer, as neither team would score in the final 20 minutes with the Vikings playing a man down.

"We've got a young team with a lot of guys new to the high school scene," said Sandpoint head coach Adam Tajan. "I liked how we battled back after being down twice."

The game featured two coaches making their boys varsity debuts, as Tajan takes over for longtime coach Randy Thoreson and Jeff Lake replacing Eric Louis.
