DRIVERS: Courtesy a dying attribute

| August 20, 2010 6:43 AM

I was out with my little brother this last Thursday around 2:30 p.m. giving him a driving lesson. He just obtained his driving permit and is learning to drive stick. He was doing very well, only having trouble with 1st gear like most of us do, and I was very proud of him.

As we were at the Mullan and Highway 41 intersection at a red light I had told him he was doing really well. When the light turned green, as fate would have it, he stalled out and the engine died. Within the two seconds it took for my brother to adjust the shifter and get the truck started again, the person behind us felt it necessary to honk.

As we drove off I waved my arm out the window as to say, "Sorry for the inconvenience" and I was flipped off. Now come on, people. We need to remember that not everyone behind the wheel is an expert or in the same hurry you might be in. With more and more students coming of age and getting their permits, we need to remember to drive safely and courteously. These children are learning from our example. On a different note, I would like to thank the gentlemen who waited so patiently behind us when my brother stalled twice at the intersection of Spokane and Seltice, causing him to miss the green light. Thank you for your courtesy, it was greatly appreciated.
