Hazel Mary (Scarcello) Brunner, 87

| August 17, 2010 4:55 AM

Hazel was born to Ippolito (Paul) and Elizabeth (Sicilia) Scarcello on Sept. 4, 1922, in Twin Lakes. She found North Idaho to be the best place to live and raise a family. Hazel attended Ramsey Grade, Rathdrum High (graduating class of 1940) and Northwest Business School. She worked as a secretary for Galena Air Field before joining the United States Marine Corp in 1944. She achieved the rank of Sergeant for the records department headquartered at Hendersen Hall, Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C.

After discharge from the service she was employed as a civilian secretary at the Farragut Naval Base.

Hazel married Roman Albert Brunner at St. Stanislaus Parish, Rathdrum on June 5, 1948. Together they started their own ranch, raising children and cattle. Hazel remained active in both endeavors until her death on Sunday, Catholic Feast of the Assumption of Mary, Aug. 15, 2010.

She was an active member of St. Stanislaus Altar Society and St. Joseph Altar Society, Spirit Lake. Her ham and lima beans were always welcomed at potlucks, and her stamina was appreciated at the dish washing sink during fundraisers. With July being her month to care for St. Joseph Church she could find children and grandchildren to help vacuum the floors and polish the many pews in the church. She also participated in many Idaho Deanery Meetings. Hazel was very proud to be a veteran of WWII as a Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corp. In the 1980s she joined the Women's Association WA-2 as a lifetime member and attended conventions in both Denver and San Diego. She truly appreciated the camaraderie and friendship of the women with those shared experiences.

Hazel and Roman's children were sons: Thomas, wife Sally and children: Paul Michael (wife, Jennifer; children, Vince and Dillon), Mary Theresa, Patricia, Cailin, Ryan, Brian Saputski (wife Jennifer, children Paige and Austin), Dan Saputski (wife Allison and daughter Chelsea), Jody Saputski.
