'Wizard of Oz' to be shown in City Park

COEUR d'ALENE - Lions, tigers, bears and the band shell, oh my!

Watch Dorothy, Toto, the Scarecrow, Tin Man and the Lion wander down the Yellow Brick Road both on the big screen and in person from the comfort of your own lawn chair at City Park on Friday.

Time Warner Cable's free community movie night will be the "Wizard of Oz," beginning around 8:15 p.m. Friday in City Park for anyone who wants to enjoy a few hours away from home - although there's no place like it - before the weekend.

But before the characters star on the silver screen, they'll make live appearances from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The fourth annual event has become an August evening tradition for families and movie fans of all ages, with a massive movie screen will be set up in front of the band shell.

"As in years past, we are anticipating hundreds of people of all ages to attend this event with their blankets, lounge chairs, family and friends," said Jody Veeder, TWC area marketing manager.

All power was restored by 3:15 a.m. Monday.

Activities start at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 20, with vendors selling hand-crafted items on the lawn of the Northern Pacific Depot Museum. Festival-goers can enjoy food from a variety of vendors and local restaurants, and there also will be several bands playing live music at the gazebo both days.

On Saturday, the Rotary Club will sponsor a Huckleberry Pancake Breakfast from 7-11 a.m. at the Wallace Jr./Sr. High School.

The event's 5K run starts Saturday at 9 a.m., with registration at 7:30 a.m. at the Civic Auditorium.

For the kids, there are great activities, like an inflatable jumping castle, mini golf, bean bag toss, basketball press and more. Finally, there is the Huckleberry Bake-Off as contestants vie for the top prize as they whip up special huckleberry creations.
