BLANCHARD - A motorist struck two participants in the Spokane to Sandpoint relay on Saturday, killing one and injuring another on U.S. Highway 41 near Blanchard, according to the Idaho State Police.

Police said Patricia A. Lambie, 46, Greenacres, Wash., was on a bicycle as a support rider for a 17-year-old runner, who was covering a portion of the 185-mile team foot race from Spokane to Sandpoint.

Both were struck about 6:30 a.m. at milepost 30.4 by a 1996 Plymouth Voyager driven by Bowdeen S. Kahuhu, 31, Newport, Wash.

According to police, the two were on the west shoulder when Kahuhu crossed over the center line into the opposing travel lane and onto the shoulder, striking both Lambie and the juvenile, whose name was not released.

Police say the runner, who was wearing reflective gear, is in serious condition.

Kahuhu was charged with manslaughter, police said.

Another relay runner was also hit and injured on Friday on Newport Highway while trying to cross near Colbert Road.

Last year, 74 teams of 12 runners each competed in the relay that starts Friday, continues through the night, and finishes Saturday.

An investigation continues.
