Rounds to call the plate Sunday night

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Coeur d'Alene Little League umpire in chief Brian Rounds will be a very visible man Sunday night.

After 20 games at the West regionals in the Little League tournament, Rounds will be behind the plate when the championship is decided on ESPN2.

"He's probably done two a day and well over 20 games down here," District I administrator Will Neal said. "Of the 14 different umpires they've got working, only two are chosen to do the championship game. He scored very highly on his marks and it's a tremendous honor."

The Western Regional championship will air at 8 p.m.

Former Viking claims state baseball honor

LOUISVILLE - Former Coeur d'Alene High standout Devon Austin was named the Idaho Lousville Slugger State High School Player of the Year.

A player is selected in 47 participating states and Washington, D.C. by coaches who are members of the Baseball Coaches Association.

"We're very proud of Devon and all his accomplishments," Coeur d'Alene baseball coach Nick Rook said. "We're proud of the way he's represented Viking baseball."

Recipients of the award receive a specially engraved black and silver Louisville Slugger bat noting their achievement. Their respective schools also receive a replica for their school trophy case.

Austin recently signed a letter of intent to play baseball at the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls.

Eastern tabbed fourth in Big Sky volleyball polls

CHENEY - The Eastern Washington University volleyball team was selected fourth in the Big Sky Conference preseason coaches poll, announced.

Portland State and Montana both received 56 points to share the title of co-favorites for the season, while defending tournament champion Northern Colorado was third with 51 points.

The Eagles had 50 points, including three first-place votes, which tied the most first-place votes for any team in the conference.

Eastern closed out the 2009 regular season with a 12-4 conference record, tying Northern Colorado for second in the league.

Annual golf tournament tees off today

POST FALLS - Bay Shore Systems, Inc. will hold its 12th annual invitational golf tournament today at Prairie Falls Golf Club starting with a shotgun start at 1 p.m.

A goal of Bay Shore Systems is to have a positive impact on the lives of others.

Dinner will be served during the awards presentation.

Enderle on Manning Award watch list

MOSCOW - University of Idaho quarterback Nathan Enderle was named to the Manning Award watch list, adding to his growing list of preseason recognitions.

The Manning Award has honored the top quarterback in the nation for the past six years.

"He certainly worked his tail off to be deserving of it," Idaho coach Robb Akey said. "It's a great honor to even be considered."

Enderle finished 2009 ranked second in the nation in yards-per-attempt with 9.31, 15th in passing yards per game, 28th in total passing yards and 45th in completions per game.

The list of 10 finalists will be released Nov. 29. The winner will be announced on Jan. 19, 2011.

Cougar baseball to hold annual alumni weekend

PULLMAN - The Washington State University baseball team will hold its annual alumni weekend Friday, Sept. 10 and Saturday, Sept. 11.

The festivities begin Friday with a golf tournament at Palouse Ridge Golf Club. Registration and check-in begins at 7 a.m. with a shotgun start slated for 8 a.m. There will be a lunch social at 1 p.m. with a baseball scrimmage at 5 p.m. Alumni can take batting practice following the scrimmage.

There will be a tailgate at Bailey-Brayton Field beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday before the Cougars take on Montana State at Martin Stadium.

Vandals soccer adds assistant coach

MOSCOW - The University of Idaho women's soccer program announced the hiring of Niki Brooks as the team's second assistant coach.

Brooks, who played four seasons at Portland State, comes to Idaho from Pacific University (Ore.), where she was an assistant coach for two seasons.
