KTEC: Training will help in long run

| August 13, 2010 10:00 PM

Vocational training is a realistic approach to providing our non-four-year college-bound student down the road to a career job for life. The three school districts are asking for a two-year levy to build a voc/tech facility. Eighty-five percent of our teens need the opportunity to learn job skills while in high school. Coupling high school and NIC vocational programs means parents and taxpayers can save the cost and time of at least one year of vocational training. A two-year levy will provide the 50,000-square foot facility.

A home assessed at $200,000 and qualified for homeowner's exemption would pay about $35 per year extra in Coeur d'Alene, $55 in Post Falls and $50 in Lakeland.

College for certification will save parents and the taxpayers up to a year of expense. KTEC would provide two years training in high school in welding, health occupations, construction and automotive trades. The vocational programs offered qualify for special outside funding and therefore will be self-sufficient and not a burden on the property tax.

Please vote YES for KTEC on Aug. 24.
