| August 12, 2010 11:40 AM

Coeur d’Alene Police Chief Wayne Longo is pleased to announce the Citizens on Patrol Academy starting Tuesday September14th 2010 through October 26th 2010. Classes will be held at the Coeur d’Alene Police Department during the evening from 6:00pm to 9:00pm one day a week.

The COPS academy is in its third year, and has been a great success in connecting citizens with the everyday workings of the police department. It is tailored to the needs of Coeur d’Alene Police Department and it is free to the public.

The purpose of the Academy is to develop positive relations between law enforcement and the community through education, and to provide training which enables citizens of Coeur d’Alene to assist the police department with various duties and services.

Each candidate will receive specialized instruction pertaining to law enforcement type duties during the COPS Academy.

COPS graduates will be assigned to a patrol beat and will drive a car marked for Citizens on Patrol. Duties include crime prevention programs, towing of abandoned vehicles, traffic control assistance at accident scenes, issuance of parking violation citations, and various assigned details.

COPS graduates will not have law enforcement powers and will not be armed. They will carry radios and wear a volunteer uniform.

Chief Longo expressed his support of the COPS program: “This is truly a fantastic opportunity for our citizens to assist law enforcement in the protection, and safe guarding of their city by becoming a member of COPS. I firmly believe that my officers and the COPS volunteers will be able to provide an increased level of protection to our community. It is our hope that this program continues to grow and provide continued service to our city.”
