Former Texans know their chili

| August 4, 2010 9:00 PM

Steve and Kim Masterson moved to Idaho from Texas several years ago and continue their passion for entering sanctioned chili competitions - as individuals not as a team.

Steve reluctantly admitted that his wife has taken home the prize a few more times than he has, but the couple did team up last week to judge the chili cook-off at the Lake City Senior Center. They agreed on the winning chili made by Spencer Peet of Bestland Senior Living and the People's Choice award that went to Jason Ball of Four Seasons Assisted Living.

Tomorrow night is the annual Post Falls Community Picnic with the Post Falls Community Volunteers at the Lions Grand Pavilion at Q'emlin Park ... right on the river. Barbecue starts at 5:30 and Kelly Hughes will play from 6 to 9 p.m. Bring the family and a lawn chair!

Janet Mack Manderville fought and won the breast cancer battle nine years ago but the cancer has returned. Janet, CHS Class of '71, is getting a little help from her friends to get through this second round of treatment. Co-workers at SYSCO Foods and former Red Hot Mamas/current Blazing Divas are holding a fundraiser for Janet's expenses on Friday, Aug. 6, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Kroc Center. Food, entertainment and a live and silent auction is $20 for adults and $10 kids younger than 12. Call Doreen, 964-1551 or Jeff, 660-7920.

The most senior member of this week's birthday club is the amazing Ruthie Johnson, celebrating her 86th birthday today. It's also the birthdate of Toni Caywood and Amy Ford. Tomorrow Dave Holinka, Kathy Manchego-Martin and Breana Rosenberger mark their birthdays and on Friday Tracey Brown, Chris Maiani, April Douglas, Kelly Aiken and Raymond Schultz will blow out the candles. Norm McBride, Bob Nonini and Cindi Wimmer share their Aug. 7 birthdate with the Three Amigos ... Lyle Ekness, Rocky Banks and baseball legend, Don Larsen. The trio have celebrated their birthdays with a beer at the Lakers for quite a few years. On Sunday Eli Yates, Roberta Larsen, Gerene Drapeau, Robert Perry and Duane Jones have reason to celebrate and Terry Morris, Charlie Dean, Christian Strailman and Roxanne Burkett start the week out wearing their party hats. Sydney Sales celebrates her Sweet 16 on Tuesday!

Mark your calendar for Tuesday, Aug. 11 and tune to Idaho Public Television at 9 p.m.. A one-hour documentary by Sonya Rosario will tell the story of the Kootenai Tribe and young activist, Amy Trice who fought "Idaho's Forgotten War" in 1974 and altered the future for her people. For those of us who've enjoyed the ambiance of the Kootenai River Inn, it will be especially interesting to know the back-story of the tribe.
