COEUR d'ALENE - If Jacob Norris knows one thing about his younger brother, it's that he usually runs much better in colder weather than when the skies are clear.

As it happened, the clouds came out on Thursday, allowing Coeur d'Alene High junior David Norris to set a school and meet record in the 800 meters in a time of 1 minute, 56.9 seconds at Thursday's Inland Empire Championships at Lake City High.

Norris, who also won the 1,600 in 4:32.66, shared male track athlete of the meet honors with Moscow sprinter Jayson Washington, who took the 100 and 200 and ran on the team's winning 4x100 relay.

"I haven't broke two minutes all year," Norris said. "This was our first real open meet. I got to go to the Pasco Invitational and the competition was more intense than state.

"I didn't really have a strategy. I guess I just run well in these conditions."

Athletes had to compete with wind and rain throughout the day, with conditions holding off until the girls 1,600.

Coeur d'Alene's boys and Post Falls' girls won team titles.

Matt Wardell of Post Falls won the shot put (53 feet, 1 inch) and discus (152-9), earning male field athlete of the meet honors.

Post Falls sophomore Shaundra Scott was named female track athlete of the meet with wins in the 100 (13.22) and 200 (26.85), as well as anchor legs in the 4x200 relay (52.02) and 4x400 relay (4:16.87).

"I didn't do as well in the 100 as I'd like to have done," Scott said. "I just wanted to get it over with."

Scott said Thursday's results gave her more confidence, with the 5A Region 1 meet in two weeks and the state meet the following week.

"I have a chance to medal in the 4x100 relay and 100 (at state)," Scott said. "Today, it was kind of bad, because it was colder - but winning is always nice."

Lake City senior Rhianna Grossman set a personal record in the 800, finishing second in 2:27.54.

"It could have been a lot better," Grossman said. "I have a lot of confidence in myself to break some of the other PRs by the end of the season - but the weather screwed it up today."

Coeur d'Alene senior Shae Carson won the discus at 130-11 and finished second in the shot put at 37-11 1/2 to claim female field athlete of the meet honors.

Those games included Lakeland at Coeur d'Alene baseball, Priest River at St. Maries baseball and softball; Sandpoint at Timberlake softball, Post Falls at Lake City softball (doubleheader), and Lake City at Sandpont tennis.
