Overland, Shaffer key Timberlake sweep

BASEBALL

SPIRIT LAKE - Timberlake scored 11 runs in the first inning of the first game, and 13 runs in the third inning of the nightcap, and beat Kellogg 13-3 and 21-1 on Saturday to remain on top of the Intermountain League.

Kyle Overland went 3 for 4 and drove in six runs in the first game for Timberlake (12-5, 8-2 IML). He knocked in five runs with a two-run single and a three-run double in the first inning alone. Jake Hess was 3 for 3 with three RBIs.

Tyler Groth, Ryan Beggerly and Jacob Harris had RBI singles in the first inning for Kellogg (3-10, 1-7), which jumped out to a 3-0 lead.

In the second game, Tyler Shaffer went 4 for 4 with two triples, a double and seven RBIs for Timberlake. Derek Tymesen was 2 for 3 with six RBIs and Conner Peery was 3 for 4 with three RBIs.

Timberlake hit seven triples in the second game.

"We were just hitting the ball on a line; it was unreal to watch," Timberlake coach Bill Rider said. "We just got on a roll, the whole team. We just hit the ball hard all day long. I don't know what got into us."

Timberlake travels to second-place St. Maries (6-11, 5-2) on Tuesday. St. Maries swept Timberlake on April 10 at Spirit Lake.

Priest River (8-8, 4-2), which swept Bonners Ferry 13-5 and 19-3 on Saturday, is in third place in the league.

Kellogg travels to Priest River on Tuesday.

MOSCOW - Matt Lambert went 7 for 7 with five RBIs for the Vikings in a sweep of the Bears.

"We played solid defense and pitched the ball well today," Coeur d'Alene coach Nick Rook said. "Our guys are starting to string some hits together and score some runs. They should be proud for staying patient over the past two weeks. The hard work is starting to pay off."

Jake Pereira struck out five in the first game and Drew Turbin went 7 for 10 at the plate with eight RBIs on the day for Coeur d'Alene (16-6), which travels to Post Falls on Tuesday.

RATHDRUM - Matt Kalbfleisch hit a solo home run in the fifth inning and three-run double in the seventh of the first game to help the visiting Bengals sweep the Hawks.

"It was a close game for a while," Lakeland coach Jason Bradbury said. "We were right in it and then Kalbfleisch hit that double and broke it open. Lewiston is a great team. One guy gets a hit, the next guy trades places with him on base."

Eric Cooper and Caleb Guerber had RBI singles in the first game for Lakeland (7-10), which hosts Cheney on Tuesday.

Johnny Rake had a two-run double in the second game for Lewiston (20-1).

ST. MARIES - Bryant Appel was 3 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored for the Lumberjacks in the first game of a nonleague doubleheader split with the Maniacs.

Adam Wilson hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning for Orofino in the second game.

"Both games were good," St. Maries coach Craig Tefft said. "The second game got away from us late after the pitching change. Michael (Welch) is a good pitcher and solid player, so I was pleased to get the split."

Ashton Stephenson added three RBIs in the first game for St. Maries (6-11), which hosts Timberlake on Tuesday.

MOSCOW - Hailey Petit smacked a two-run home run in the third inning and finished 2 for 4 with four RBIs to lead Coeur d'Alene in the first game of a nonleague sweep of Moscow.

Jessica Lupinacci added a two-run shot in the seventh and Nikki Ragsdale picked up a pair of hits while earning the win for the Vikings (16-3).

Kristina Goodwin's two-run home run in the third backed up freshman Lindsie Scholwinski's 15-strikeout performance in the nightcap.

"Scholwinski had total command on the mound today," Coeur d'Alene coach Larry Bieber said. "We hit the ball pretty well today - to have a big offensive output is definitely fun for the kids."

The Vikings play at Post Falls on Tuesday.

SPIRIT LAKE - Kodi Kuykendall drove in the game-winning run in the second game with the bases loaded and nobody out to give the Tigers an Intermountain League doubleheader sweep over the Wildcats.

Sydnie Malloy hit a two-run single in a three-run second inning in the first game for Timberlake.

In the second game, starting pitcher Nicole Cameron went 2 for 4 with three RBIs for Timberlake (10-9, 8-1 IML), which travels to St. Maries on Tuesday.

"Our girls did a great job of coming back," Timberlake coach Mike Menti said. "These were some tough conditions with the wind blowing all over the place, but both teams played well."

Kirsten Viche had two doubles in the second game for Kellogg (5-7, 4-4), which travels to Priest River on Tuesday.
