Lake City notches softball sweep

PREP SOFTBALL

COEUR d'ALENE - Casey Stangel singled to score Jamie Hall in the seventh inning of the first game, and Lake City went on to sweep Lewiston 5-4 and 3-0 on Friday in 5A Inland Empire League play.

Stangel had eight strikeouts in the first game for Lake City (13-4, 6-3 5A IEL), which travels to Sandpoint on Tuesday.

Becky Short and Kallie Neal scored on an error in center field in the bottom of the fifth inning for Lake City.

Nicole Redd hit a solo home run in the first game for Lewiston (13-9, 3-7).

ST. MARIES - Morgan Cummings was 6 for 7 with five RBIs for the Lumberjacks in a nonleague sweep of the Maniacs.

"It seems like we've put a lot of things together this week and are progressing a little bit," St. Maries coach Todd Bitterman said.

Tia Asbury had eight strikeouts in the first game for St. Maries (10-5), which hosts Timberlake on Tuesday.

COEUR d'ALENE - Kyle Knigge went 5 for 6 on the day for the visiting Bengals (18-1, 9-1 5A IEL) in the sweep of the Timberwolves.

In the second game, Grant Curtis hit a two-run double and Bryce Mort followed with an RBI single as Lake City (9-8, 3-6) took a 3-1 lead in the third inning. But Kasey Knigge hit a two-run homer in the fourth to tie it, and Lewiston added three runs in the fifth and five in the seventh.

Mitch Bevacqua had three hits on the day for Lake City, which travels to Sandpoint on Tuesday.

POST FALLS - Jordan Hernandez won his No. 3 singles match against Jay Brewer as the Trojans defeated the Panthers.

"Jordan is coming around as a sophomore," Post Falls coach Angela Blair said. "He's a real committed player that puts in the extra time to get better."

Post Falls travels to Moscow on Monday.

Coeur d'Alene Charter travels to Lewiston today to play the District 2 schools.

COEUR d'ALENE - Alyssa Hawley went 6 for 7 with five runs and four RBIs as the Cardinals swept the Spartans in Scenic West Athletic Conference play at Memorial Field.

Lauren Maloney and Jessica Ross each hit two-run home runs in a six-run second inning for North Idaho in the first game.

In the second game, Hawley had four RBIs for NIC (30-24, 23-19 SWAC).

The Spartans dropped to 4-32, 4-32. The teams conclude their weekend series today with a doubleheader at noon.
