Smelterville man dies in motorcycle crash

| April 19, 2010 9:00 PM

A 44-year-old Smelterville man died Sunday after his motorcycle left the roadway and crashed into a state drilling vehicle that was parked and coned off, the Idaho State Police said.

Darrell L. Zinn was traveling early Sunday westbound on Silver Valley Road, near Pinehurst in Shoshone County, when for some unknown reason he crossed the centerline shortly after 7 a.m., police said.

On his 1986 Honda 450, Zinn went off the south shoulder of the roadway for about 40 feet and struck the Idaho Department of Transportation vehicle.

Zinn was ejected from the motorcycle, and his helmet came off during impact, police said. He was flown to Kootenai Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 11:58 a.m.

Police said alcohol was not a factor, and that the investigation is continuing.
