The oak conversation continues
To oak or not to oak? It is an argument that has gone on for centuries. All started by the search to find a better way to transport wine across the seas. For those wine consumers that don’t know oak barrels were first employed as a way to transport wine from Europe to the Americas in the 1700s, it was then discovered that this time spent in wood barrels indeed altered the wine. It softened it, deepened the flavors and added complexity. The rest is history with countless arguments popping up over the years about whether it is good or not good, and when just enough oak becomes too much.
CTE holds many answers for Idaho's job problem
Idaho has set the goal of having 60 percent of our 25-34 year old workers hold a postsecondary credential by 2020. This goal was established because studies show 6 out of 10 workers need education after high school to qualify for a job.

LABOR: A liberal dilemma
The Editorial on July 21 was excellent and thought provoking. It makes me wonder why we have this labor shortage and relatively high unemployment. Could it be because the liberals have increased unemployment benefits, welfare in general and have been relatively lax in enforcing drug laws to the point that many would rather live on the dole than work? Unemployment benefit costs should have gone down with so many employment opportunities available but I wonder if they have? I do not mind helping those actually in need for good and sufficient reasons, but I object to helping deadbeats. How many receiving these generous benefits are truly in need due to circumstance beyond their control?

PRIEST: Fish for thought
Since the 1990s, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has been killing the lake trout in upper Priest Lake. Tons of fish are wasted each year by the fish and wildlife at a cost of millions of dollars. Why! For the ethnic cleansing to save another non-native fish, the kokanee, and two native species, the bull trout and the cutthroat. Funding for this comes from the taxpayers (Endangered Species Act), people’s electric bills (Bonneville Power Administration) and the Kalispell Tribe.
HOSPITAL: Smooth sailing now
On July 6, I underwent unplanned surgery on the lower spine at Kootenai Health. The care I received was nothing short of fantastic. However, upon leaving the hospital, I discovered a torture gauntlet of speed bumps. Not ordinary speed bumps. Literally the largest ones I’ve ever seen. There was no way out of the parking lot without passing over them. Even the slightest rolling over the bumps was excruciatingly painful — and they were everywhere. I contemplated how many patients leave the hospital every day following surgery. Somewhere in Kootenai County, an actual human being thought it was a good idea to install these in front of a surgery center.

At what age should someone have their hearing evaluated?
Hearing should be checked anytime one feels that they are not hearing well, and it is very important to have your hearing checked if you have a sudden hearing loss! People that experience sudden hearing loss should be seen by an Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) physician right away to prevent or halt permanent loss.
White water, white knuckles
For the past several years my husband and I have taken annual mini-vacations doing something we’ve not done before. Last year we went whale watching in the San Juan Islands and the year before took a flight over Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon. A jet boat day trip in Hells Canyon was fun but doing that in August, I’d not recommend.
Healthy herbs for summer
Boost your health this summer by growing fresh herbs on your windowsill or in a sunny location on your porch or patio. Herbs are easy to grow in small containers and add a pop of flavor, color, and nutrition to just about any dish! Annual herbs only live for the current season. Perennials will live for two more years, but can also be planted in pots and brought inside for the winter. Grow the following herbs or snag a plant start from the farmer’s market to liven up any dish or snack:
NOISE: Enforce law or quit
I would like to congratulate Mr. Marty Meyer for speaking up about the ongoing noise problem in our once relatively quiet town. Too long the majority (that term still means what our forefathers meant it to stand for — majority rules) of people in our town have had to tolerate (a liberal excuse for no backbone) unnecessary noise by a few offenders for the so-called sake of business or some other gutless excuse. We now have an ordinance to control this worsening problem. What we need are some officials with a backbone to do the job that the majority want enforced by law, not some liberal dribble excuse called educational actions. What a crock of B.S. in plain English.

As we approach veraison and the half way point in the 2017 wine grape growing season it seems like a good time for an update on the crop. It's not always what it seems
We see it all the time now: a set of symptoms that appears (especially to non-physician) to describe a particular health condition. Patients are researching their own conditions on the internet now, coming to their physician with the information, hoping to validate it. This comes with a set of risks and benefits that seasoned physicians didn’t have to deal with 30 years ago. The information accessed, isn’t always what it seems.

The snoring bear: Part 2
The first part of this story is in the July 12 edition of the Coeur d’Alene Press. This is the continuation of the story. This man loved his afternoon naps. But, to need daily afternoon naps is not a normal thing for those who have had a good night's’ sleep. He was suffering from a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) known as excessive daytime tiredness (EDS). And he snored all the time.
NARCAN: Choose life
I felt compelled to respond to Michael Murphy’s objection of the Post Falls PD now carrying Narcan spray to help save the lives of those who overdose on substances such as heroin. His complaint is that essentially, you’re enabling substance abuse if you repeatedly save addicts, and that “the public” is the one who pays the price for the Narcan.

SCAM: Grandparents, beware
I received a phone call yesterday from my “grandson.” He sounded like my 20-year-old grandson. His opening line was Hi Grandma, I just wanted to call you because I feel so sad. He said his friend, Kevin, had been killed by a drunk driver while he was running. Grandson had gone to funeral and got a ride back from a casual friend. They were stopped because the friend was on his cell phone which was illegal. The trunk was searched and drugs were found. He knew nothing. The “policeman” who gave his name, badge number and precinct got on the phone and said my grandson was totally innocent and would testify against the driver. However, because of the drugs involved they needed $7,000 to release him. I responded by saying that an innocent person should be released without bail. At that point the “policeman” hung up.

Tribute to outstanding citizen-legislators

Muscle strategies
All of us have them, even our elite athletes. A muscle strategy is a way of eliciting a group of muscles to accomplish a task or athletic endeavor in order to do the activity in the most efficient, cost effective way for our body. However that being said, it doesn't mean it's being done in the best way for your body. Just because you have golfed, water skied, and biked for 10 years doesn't mean you are doing it right. Know wonder sometimes your knees hurt, you back aches and your neck is stiff after the activity. These muscle strategies you have had with you for years may not be really as efficient as you thought.

VETERAN: Who we are
I take objection with Bob Hunt’s definition of who he stated is a veteran! A veteran gave/gives “military service” for our country. There are five, not seven as he mentioned…Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard make up our military services, period. Anxiety rising
The rates for mortgage interest rates rose last week for the second week in a row adding to the angst many first-time homebuyers are feeling due to the lack of inventory and heated competition for those few houses. Far from the higher interest rates, we have seen in recent history these rates still come as a shock to many who are new to the mortgage market. Last week’s increase marked a jump of 7 basis points from the previous week landing at 4.03 percent according to Fannie Mae. A year ago that rate was 3.42 so from some buyers’ perspective this is a huge increase.

We are also aware that most of us over consume calories from a blend of high calorie carbohydrates, sugary snacks and beverages. These bills would help Idaho small businesses
Small business owners need real regulatory relief. They need an advocate to force government agencies to consider the impact of regulations on their businesses. MS: Check the data
I wanted to respond to Larry Spencer of Post Falls. He is getting his info from the New England Journal of Medicine in 1983? Holy Cow, how far back is that? Perhaps he is not aware that the Pacific Northwest has the highest incidence of MS anywhere in the world except some village in Scotland (I can’t recall the name of the village). In the late ’90s the VAMC in Spokane was assigned our first neurologist. After six months, he was hired away by the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta to study this unique phenomenon. Is it genetic? Is it environmental? No one knows, as far as I know. But for Mr. Spencer to quote dated material from 1983 is foolish.

Acupuncture for migraines and headaches
It has been known for many decades (actually, many centuries!) that acupuncture is an effective modality for the treatment of pain, including migraines and headaches. In March 15, 2004 a study published in the British Medical Journal, then chronicled By Jennifer Warner and Brunilda Nazario, MD of WebMD Health News: “Researchers found that compared with standard medical care, acupuncture offers substantial benefits in preventing headaches and improving the quality of life for people who suffer from frequent headaches, especially migraines. Acupuncture may provide lasting relief from the pain of chronic headaches, such as migraines, according to a new study.”

Why wineries close
It likely seems like a simple answer, but for many wine consumers it becomes more complex and puzzling when one of our favorite wineries shuts the doors. In some ways it is simple a winery closes for the same reasons any other business does, in other ways though it is more complex. Wineries after all are businesses and it is only with the deepest of pockets that they keep going regardless of their economic sustainability.

GOP: Wrong on health
Americans across the U.S. have been put in the crosshairs by the GOP’s recent attempts to repeal the ACA and pass their own health care bill, and the Palouse is no exception. Idaho’s 1st district under Raul Labrador has been projected to cost health care coverage to 73,500 people, one in every 10 people in this half of the state. For Washington’s 5th district under Cathy McMorris Rodgers has, they’ve been projected to cost another 36,200 people their health care, around one in every 20 people across the district. In both cases, this is an unacceptable gutting of health care that helps protect common Americans and ensures financial stability and peace of mind.

Health insurance is more than a policy, it’s peace of mind. It’s knowing your family will be cared for and not having to worry about going broke when you get sick. That’s why I strongly oppose the Senate health care bill. The more I learn about it, the less I like it. Robbing health care from millions of Americans to give yet another tax cut to the rich and powerful is just plain cruel. Our health care system needs to be improved — we all agree on that. But this bill would do exactly the opposite — for no other reason than greed. I urge Senator Crapo and Senator Risch to vote no on the Senate health care bill.

VA: I second that emotion
I want to compliment Mr. Paul Underwood of St. Marie’s about his letter to the Veteran’s Administration. I think the VA is great! Sure, you have to sit down and wait in long lines. So what? They still give you what you need and what you want. It’s the best thing about being a veteran. If you you go in and say, “I got a pain,” you may sit there for a few hours. But if you actually have a real problem they rush you right through and take care of you immediately. All you have to do is fill out the paperwork to get started with the VA. You need your DD-214.

HEALTH: Single-payer pitfalls
Regarding Saturday’s “My Turn” by Mike Joyce, I couldn’t agree more with his opinion regarding our health insurance for Americans. It is obviously apparent to any thinking American that the single pay for health insurance is the only way to go. This is backed by the way many Americans are clamoring to go to Canada, England and France for medical coverage. Of course, they may have to wait a year or two for a simple operation, but fortunately it is paid for by the government.
STATE: Boost key alternate route
The accidents on I-90 east of Coeur d’Alene on Saturday essentially shut down the freeway in both directions for over 4 hours. HEALTH: Dying for conformity
“Single Payer” health care is not “Healthcare Liberty.” It puts health care in the hands of voters — most of whom are in good health and therefore end up voting in favor of their own wallets. In the United Kingdom, a court ruled that the parents of a child suffering from a mitochondrial disease could not take him to the U.S. for an experimental treatment. Instead their child must die, presumably to maintain the integrity and fairness of their health care system. The parents had raised $1.6 million for the treatment, but the EU courts said that they could not remove him from government custody and that against the parents’ wishes life support was being disconnected.
