They also represent a great example of why the Constitution was written in such strong language, with declarative statements like “SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED.” Not “should not” — shall not.

Bertie was the musician, but Elton was the entertainer.

HILLARY: Problem with liberals

We now have been provided proof positive by FBI Director Comey that Hillary Clinton is a pathological liar and is guilty of several criminal offenses. Of course anyone with at least two functioning brain cells already knew that. Yet amazingly enough, defying all reason and logic, liberals will still support her. Some will even go over the top and maintain that she really isn’t a liar and isn’t guilty of anything, but merely misunderstood. I’d be willing to bet that if you asked these liberals if they would have rewarded their children for being chronic liars and crooks they would say no. Yet even more amazing, they are perfectly willing to hand the keys to the White House over to a law breaking pathological liar. Any sane person would ask how anyone could have such warped thinking. The answer is plain and very simple. When it comes to liberalism, you just can’t cure stupid.

SUGGESTED: Beach and fireworks

It was great that someone put in a shower and foot wash at City Park, but now it is time to put something down at the public parts of Sanders Beach. Our little neighborhood beach is getting busier with triathlete swimmers and locals discovering a smaller, quieter beach. It would be nice for our athletes and locals to have at least a foot shower at both entrances to the Sanders beaches. This would be a beneficial investment.

The Coeur d’Alene Press has asked citizens to support our Coeur d’Alene 271 school board by commenting about the need for counselors. Congress should end the Black Lives Matter movement. They should be deemed a violent racist militant group for their threats to kill white police officers and threats to create a coup if Trump is elected president. They should be considered similar to ISIS and anyone knowingly supplying monetary support or weapons to them directly or indirectly should be charged with whatever crimes are committed or instigated by them. Calling for killing officers is a terrorist threat and illegally blocking roads and highways should not be tolerated. Mayors and city leaders demanding police stand down should be prosecuted for treason.

All olive oils are not created equally

One of the key ingredients to a long and healthy life is olive oil. For years dietitians have been promoting the use of olive oil as a heart-healthy monounsaturated fat. Because of its rich source of tocopherols, carotenoids and polyphenols, which have anti-inflammatory properties olive oil has been shown to provide cardiovascular and anti-cancer effects. Italy, Spain and Greece are the major producers of olive oil and it is the principal source of dietary fat in these countries. But not all olives or olive oils are created equally.

The Legislature’s joint working group on Idaho’s health coverage gap has convened its first meeting this morning. Co-Chairman Rep. Tom Loertscher, R-Iona, talked about “the resistance that we’re having among members” in the House. “I think mistakenly or otherwise, we thought that we were talking about a pure Medicaid expansion. And the director can speak for himself, but that is not what has ever been intended in Idaho,” he said. “We want to change the way we deliver all of Medicaid, and fit that with working in this population.”

KIDS: Teach by example

There are three distinct areas of concern in a child’s life: the home, the community and the school. Educators should not be burdened with addressing all of these; they certainly have enough to do without taking on every facet of concern in a child’s life. Parents need to be responsible for their children’s home life. If their parenting is so poor as to cause grievous harm to their children, we need to think about removing children from such homes.

LEAVITT, ESQ., a member of the State Bar of Idaho, of ALDRIDGE PITE, LLP as trustee, will sell at public auction, to the highest bidder, for cash, in lawful money of the United States, all payable at the time of sale, the following described real property, situated in the County of Kootenai, State of Idaho, and described as follows, to wit: LOT 24, BLOCK 5, RIVER PARK PLAZA ADDITION, ACCORDING TO THE PLAT RECORDED IN THE OFFICE OF THE COUNTY RECORDER IN BOOK "F" OF PLATS, PAGE 22, RECORDS OF KOOTENAI COUNTY, IDAHO. The Trustee has no knowledge of a more particular description of the above referenced real property, but for purposes of compliance with Idaho Code Section 60-113, the Trustee has been informed that the address of: 208 S SUNSET DR, POST FALLS, ID 83854, is commonly associated with said real property. I received little leadership education in pursuit of a college degree. It was not until my military service that I began to understand the principles of leadership. My time at the U.S. Infantry School provided me with some of the most valuable education on leadership principles. The motto of the infantry school is “Follow Me!” To my way of thinking, leadership involves a few basic principles. Seek wise counsel, evaluate your options, choose your words carefully, be decisive, and take ownership of your actions — good or bad.

Long held precious in ideals of justice is that it must be blind — to gender, race, religion or creed, nationality, disability, age and affluence. Lawyers, whether behind the bench, at the bar, or working in other fields are the guardians of this ideal in every society. While man’s imperfection inherently includes biases born of individual fears and experiences, the dangers of stereotype and prejudice can be overcome with self-awareness and conscious, lifelong efforts.

Are sudden cardiac death & obstructive sleep apnea related?

There are nearly a half a million deaths each year in the United States attributed to sudden cardiac death (SDC). There are tens of millions of Americans with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). In a study done in Sweden, 50 percent of non-obese women aged 20-70 have OSA. If you add the obese patients, it is easily greater that 50 percent. And there are more men with OSA than women, because the airway in men is longer, leading to more probability that the airway can collapse.

Wine tasting etiquette

Tasting in Wine Country and in local shops has changed some over the years. Events are often more elaborate, and both wineries and retail stores like ours invest a fair amount of time, energy and capital in creating an experience that is educational and rewarding. In many Wine Country areas, fees for tasting have increased with the effort and wine that goes into the tasting. In Napa, tasting fees of $75 for a reserve tasting at the more sought-after wineries are not unusual. In nearby Walla Walla, the charge to taste is more modest, but the wineries where tastings are complimentary are dwindling fast.

How to opine with civility

Tired of nasty politics, of anger, hate speech, and divisiveness? The problem isn’t limited to Capitol Hill, but is endemic to modern humanity — a lack of civility. As we can control no one but ourselves, to encourage civility in human discourse, we must begin there; our own civility encourages the same tone in others, so an example-setting chain can grow stronger, reach further.

As you dig through your cupboards to find that missing lid, smile.  So many of us that were blessed to be a part of this woman’s life will forever find that lid.  You know the one, the one with the cursive E sprawled across the top in black sharpie.  Permanent and larger than life, exactly how she will remain in our memories and in our hearts.  Jean “Ellen” Anderson was a gift and a joy to everyone she came in contact with.  Daughter, sister, friend, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt.  None of these labels do her justice, she was and will forever be so much more.  She was a woman with a zest for life on her own terms, a woman who lived and loved with passion and grace and a wit that could drop a grown man into tears of laughter. She instilled in all of us quiet (some of us not so quiet) determination, pride and more than anything love and loyalty to family.  One of the greatest lessons she taught was that family was defined by love, not by blood, and we embrace this lesson with the love we share in the largest ‘family’ around.  Ellen’s spirit took flight on June 24, 2016 while at home with her loved ones. This spirit is carried on in every member of her very large and extended family.  She was born May 12

Roy "Wayne" Verbeck

Roy "Wayne" Verbeck

Roy “Wayne” Verbeck Obituary In the early morning of July 7, 2016, Wayne Verbeck passed away in his sleep in Bakersfield, California. The cause was complications from Parkinson’s disease. Born June 25, 1927 in Spokane, Washington, Wayne first lived in Spirit Lake, Idaho. From there the Verbeck family moved about the beautiful Northern Idaho area, ultimately settling in Rathdrum, Idaho. It was here in the seventh grade that he became acquainted with his classmate Patricia O’Donnell. Their friendship grew into a romance, with the couple becoming inseparable in high school. He and Patricia were two of the 16-member Rathdrum High School senior class of 1945. Immediately after graduation, Wayne enlisted in the Merchant Marine. He found himself on ships that traveled to exotic ports of call including Alaska, New York City, Hawaii, and Venezuela. At the end of his last deployment, Wayne was discharged in Savannah, Georgia and had to hitchhike all the way across the country back to Rathdrum. His girl was still waiting for him when he returned from the service. Wayne and Patricia married on June 12, 1948. Apparently it was a good choice for both of them because they celebrated their 68th anniversary this past June. Wayne and Patricia’s family grew with the births of Gregory Wayne and Christine Ann. The family then moved from Rathdrum to Spokane, where Wayne had attended Kinman Business University upon being discharged from the service. After working for the Northern Idaho Consolidated School District for two years, Wayne entered the field in which he would remain his entire career: the oil industry. Starting as a bookkeeper with Inland Empire Oil Refineries, working up to auditor at Phillips 66 Petroleum Company, and, ultimately, credit manager for Tosco, Wayne traveled the entire western United States as part of his job. It was this career that had the family moving to Bountiful, Utah, then Whittier, California, and finally Bakersfield. Wayne retired in 1986 and chose to stay in his new hometown of Bakersfield. At age 55, Wayne decided to take up the sport of racquetball, and he loved it. He not only played but began competing, both locally and in the Huntsman World Senior Games and the United States Senior Games. He competed in both singles and doubles, winning a multitude of bronze, silver and gold medals. Neither a heart attack nor lung surgery stopped him from playing. He continued to play until his early 80s. Wayne will be remembered for many qualities. His calm manner and varied life experiences led many to seek his advice. He was a good team player, both at work, on the town baseball teams and the company bowling teams. He got along with everybody and everybody got along with him. His children will remember him for the annual 2-week summer camping trips, where the rule seemed to be that every day they had to drive another five hundred miles, pitch the tent for one night, and move on again the next morning. While a bit hectic, this system resulted in scores of places visited, many wonderful memories made, and a wealth of exciting and funny stories that are still being passed down in the family. His grandchildren will remember him for the summer road trips in the van. Being a truly brave man, he could be found almost every summer for over 15 years driving one, two, three, four or all five of his granddaughters and his wife throughout the Western United States. When a granddaughter reached the age of 2, she was considered old enough to join in the fun and space was made for her in the van. Wayne was preceded in death by his father Roy, mother Mildred and granddaughter Sandy Verbeck. Wayne is survived by his wife Patricia, son Gregory (Phyllis Ishisaka), daughter Christine (Dennis) Bolt, grandchildren Jennifer Verbeck, Melissa (Richard) Bogle, Emily (James Keenley) Bolt, Shannon Bolt, great-grandchildren Haley, Hannah, Lillian, and Charlotte Bogle, and Lila Mae, Raleigh and Meadow Keenley. He is also survived by his sister Vonnie Satchwell and her family. Wayne was a member of St. Philip the Apostle Church in Bakersfield where he was a greeter and liturgical reader at many a Sunday Mass. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Wayne at St. Philip the Apostle Church, 7100 Stockdale Highway, Bakersfield, on Thursday, July 14 at 9:30a.m. A reception will follow immediately after in Logan Hall at St. Philip’s. Wayne’s final resting place will be at Pine Grove Cemetery in Rathdrum, Idaho. A memorial ceremony will take place there at a later date. His family would like to thank Wayne’s dedicated, loving caregivers at Whispering Pines: Chito, Luz, Jane, Ashley, and Lorna. Thanks also to the staff of Optimal Hospice for the outstanding care they provided Wayne these past months. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, Donation Processing, P.O. Box 5014, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5014.

HILLARY: New legal standard

This week we learned that one must not only commit a crime but that there must also be evidence proving that the crime was done intentionally. FBI director James Comey suggests that no charges be brought against Hillary Clinton as her multiple offenses could not be directly associated with the will do wrong. Meanwhile, here in Coeur d’Alene, each one of us who is stopped for a driving violation must also be proven to be in said violation by intentional and willful action. Therefore, the excuse, “I did not know I was speeding” must be met by, “OK, just slow down.”

Know wonder sometimes your knees hurt, you back aches and your neck is stiff after the activity. These muscle strategies you have had with you for years may not be really as efficient as you thought.

GUNS: Here's an idea

In 1996, in Australia, Martin Bryant killed 35 people and injured 23 with an AR-15. There has not been another mass shooting in Australia since. I read the June 22nd opinion page of the Press and the five love letters to GUNS. “Blame the media and fix morality’; ‘Blame the Democrats”; guns are a “Most Sacred Liberty”; “Blame the President and Saul Alinski”; and “we only kill an average of 18 people a year in mass shootings.” Lastly; “If a fire had killed the 49 people in Orlando, we wouldn’t ban matches.”
