The long-range computer models continue to show this pattern with more storms expected to slam many residents in the eastern time zone.

DRAMA: Show PF some love
I frequently see articles in the Press regarding high school drama department plays. I see items for Coeur d’ Alene High School and possibly Charter Academy. My granddaughter lives and goes to high school in Post Falls. I have been to Post Falls High School twice to see plays put on by the drama department. I never see anything in the Press about the Post Falls plays. I’m wondering why there is this inequity. Is it because Post Falls doesn’t choose to advertise or is that Post Falls is being overlooked? Both plays I have seen were done very well and it’s too bad that more of the public are not aware of them.
POPULATION: A papal plea
The Pope, from his walled-in country, has ironically labeled Americans who want to close the borders to the endless millions of poor, suffering immigrants from countries that continue to propagate themselves further into the severely overpopulated, ignorant, fear and apathy-riddled dark ages, as non-Christian. Since the 1965 immigration reform act, the American citizens have absorbed upwards of 100 million immigrants. The situation has not helped the American people or our brothers and sisters globally, yet one cannot deny that Americans have helped their share. The only winners in the overpopulation crisis are the corporations.
WOLVES: End the slaughter
First, they flew helicopters into the Frank Church Wilderness on a deceptive mission to collar wolves. Now, Idaho Fish and Game conspirators are surreptitiously flying military-like helicopter missions into the Lolo country to shoot wolves (how many are wounded?) — beautiful wolves struggling to keep their packs alive; and, of course, must kill elk and other animals to survive.

Hands-on best way to learn - for life
In our increasingly complex world, success is driven not just by what you know, but also by what you can do with that knowledge. Hands-on learning provides a greater relevance to the real world and how it applies in a real way. This approach to learning helps students know what to do with the knowledge they have gained and apply it to real-world problems. Our education system needs to provide our children with knowledge, skills to solve problems, and a learning atmosphere where they can gather and evaluate evidence and make sense of it all. This type of education will inspire our youth to become a part of the new generation of innovators.

STATE: Respect baby brother
The heavy hand of state legislators landed on small Idaho towns on Feb. 19, 2016. The same body which vigorously opposes the federal government interfering in what it considers “State Affairs” is not opposed to passing on its brand of “do as I say, not what I do” justice to communities on issues important to their viability. I find it incredulous that little brother (the state), doesn’t want big brother (the feds) meddling, but determines it is OK to beat up baby brother (local communities).

Religious freedom American core value
When my wife and I were attending college in Hawaii, one of our favorite places to visit was the National Cemetery of the Pacific, known by locals as “Punchbowl” because it sits nestled in Punchbowl Crater right in Honolulu. It is an extraordinary, beautiful, quiet and sacred space where over 34,000 veterans are interred. We’ve taken our children back there twice so they too can feel the spirit of dedication and sacrifice that is found there. I can never visit Punchbowl without weeping for gratitude for the men and women who gave “the last full measure of devotion” so that my family and I can remain free.

SB 1338: It's unconstitutional
Senate Bill 1338, brought to us by Sen. Sheryl Nuxoll, R.-Cottonwood, purports to allow counties to declare federal land a “Catastrophic Public Nuisance.” The proposed legislation then claims to allow a county or its sheriff to take steps to abate the nuisance. Presumably this means the county can order trees be logged, roads be constructed, or prescriptive fires be lit on federal land.

Gratitude for getting a second chance
For 63 years I’ve marked the date of my birth in May, but Feb. 24 is when I celebrate my second chance birthday. Today’s the day 10 years ago that coronary stents were placed in two coronary arteries that were nearly 100 percent blocked. I dodged the heart attack bullet by maybe a day or a week or a month. Without the intervention of the Kootenai Heart Center, I would have had a heart attack that I may or may not have survived.

BILLS: One good, one bad
I recently read two articles that disturbed me. The first one related to the House State Affairs Committee’s decision to kill the Medicaid gap bill. This decision directly affects 70,000 Idahoans who can not afford medical care. It will also impact everybody since those who have no other option go to the ER where the cost is passed on to us.

Unable to make it down to the Boise area this weekend — it wasn’t my turn — I surrounded myself with technology and tried to catch a glimpse of what I could from the state high school girls basketball tournaments.
JOBS: Hire young Americans
I have nothing against employing immigrants. They are mostly good people. What I am concerned with are those native-born young folks who are unable to find work.
EVOLUTION: Think about this
There is an issue I have been thinking about for a long time that I think is more important than any political issue. The magnitude of this issue is so great that I was afraid raising it would take much more than 250 words. So I will present it with minimal detail.

STATE 1A DIVISION II GIRLS BASKETBALL: Lakeside brings home consolation title for second straight year
NAMPA — At least to some degree, Lakeside’s 37-35 win over Nezperce was a little spooky, in the consolation final of the state 1A Division II girls basketball tournament on Saturday at Nampa High.
ELECTION: Give Cruz control
The very future of our constitutionally based republic is at risk in the coming presidential election. The next President will likely nominate several new Supreme Court Justices and this will determine if we stop socialist control or continue on the path of socialist oppression of rights. We are one liberal Supreme Court justice away from losing our constitution. Free Speech: lost if the court goes the way of Canada in punishing pastors for “hate speech” when preaching traditional Christian doctrines. Right to Bear Arms: lost, when a generation of liberal justices chip away at gun rights. Right of Unlawful Seizure: Already going, with recent rulings on use of eminent domain to benefit private business (for the public good?) Right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness: forever gone for full term babies in the womb.
Be prepared, North Idaho
A disaster of epic proportions is headed our way sometime in the perhaps not-so-distant future.

OCCUPIERS: They are patriots
The February 12 editorial, “Occupation Ends with a Whimper,” is astonishingly laced with hatred and brash cynicism, typical of shallow-minded people that make a mockery of that which they know little about or understand. You have a right to your opinion, callous and insulting as it may be, but you have a problem with others whom you disagree to have that very same right! So enjoy your right to free speech while you still have it because tyrants are trying to take it away. And once it’s gone — it’s gone.

One bill seeks to require IDFG to spend at a minimum $200,000 a year to contract out the controlled hunt drawings. Is there any actual evidence of misconduct? The heart of the matter
When you think of any disease that has the most controversy, it is the heart. Yet, for all intents and purposes, it is the most simplistic. What really matters to the heart is what is present to nourish it. Nourishment allows it to function, the lack thereof, causes it to struggle to function. While there are many fancy names for the varying ways the heart can struggle, the way the heart responds to what goes into the mouth (or what doesn’t go into the mouth!) is what matters the most.

Eat wholesome with whole grains
Grains have been a staple of the human diet for thousands of years, providing nourishment along with a rich history of culinary and agricultural traditions. You may have heard claims from the USDA supporting more whole grain consumption or seen food labels designating “made with whole grains.” However, on the flip side, grains have received a lot of media attention lately due to popular diets that promote a grain-free, wheat-free, or gluten-free lifestyle for a variety of ailments. This can make for a confusing message! For healthy individuals focused on preventative disease, whole grain consumption is associated with many benefits. Substantial research supports the beneficial effects of whole grains on heart disease, Type-2 diabetes, gut health, cancer prevention, and maintenance of a healthy weight.

WAGES: Let locals decide
If you think the state of Idaho should stand on the side of caring for the young people of Idaho, now is the time to make your voice heard. The final vote in the House and the Senate will be heard in the coming weeks. The House of Representatives Business Panel in Idaho has already passed a law from committee that forbids cities in Idaho from voting on raising their minimum wages — a law incidentally brought in by ALEC, from outside the state, especially damaging to all our workers and wages.

TRUMP: A 3-letter word
The first time I voted was in 1972. I voted for Tricky Dick. He was a Republican and he made a few promises that he kept. He promised to get us out of Vietnam and he did. Seems to me he promised every taxpayer in America an extra 100 bucks on their tax return. He kept that too. Sure he was a liar and a crook who made a joke out of the Presidency. What about a few guys who took office after him?
HUNTING: No to auction tags
We oppose the sale of any Governor’s Big Game Auction tags for Idaho’s wildlife. Recently Idaho’s legislators and IDFG are talking of selling 12 more “Governor Auction Tags.” The selling of these tags is for only a special interest group of people. This plan would be an abuse of Idaho’s hunting heritage, of Idaho’s wildlife by Idaho sportsmen and would create additional resentment and distrust for the legislators and IDFG.

IDAHO: Legislative hypocrisy
I’m confused. I need someone to explain to me the behavior of the Idaho Legislature. It is dominated by Republicans who historically and, often, say that the federal government is too big and interferes with too many issues that should rightly be under the jurisdiction of the State. Yet, I see several recent actions by the Legislature by which it is attempting to keep local governments from passing certain laws. Is that big government interfering and being too big?
BENGHAZI: Don't be shallow
I just had to laugh when I read Marvin Miller’s letter about reasons to see the new movie about Benghazi. My fellow Americans, since when are Hollywood movies considered a viable source of information? Hollywood movies are, ultimately, about entertainment, regardless of what sources they consult. Hollywood movies are about special effects, sound effects, blood and guts.
TRUMP: Christians, cast him out
It is somewhere between incredulous to betrayal for some Christians to see evangelical leaders lending their endorsements to Donald Trump for President. Perhaps they are willing to overlook his chameleon-like positions on major conservative planks. Perhaps they are practicing “forgiveness” for Trump’s moral shortcomings: three marriages and numerous extramarital affairs, and bankruptcies which left his investors (but not Trump) empty-handed, even as Trump brags that he has never asked God for forgiveness. Or perhaps these Christian leaders are just more examples of Trump’s lifelong history of crony-capitalism with both Democrats & Republicans: the quid pro quo of buying favors which he boasts as part of his great skill of “dealing making.”

HOUSING: Remember the poor
Coeur d’Alene is supposedly trying to help the homeless, vets and low income but yet they tear down the last low-income housing that some people can afford to put up an expensive hotel/motel. Really? I think we have enough hotels and motels here in Coeur d’Alene. We need more places for the low income and the homeless.

PETS: Punish rude owners
I too am disgusted at the amount of people who seem to think it’s OK for them to take their non-service dogs (and other animals) in businesses that sell food. A few months ago when I was in a Post Falls business. I was rather aggravated at the presence of two separate parties with small dogs in the store at the same time. I noticed that both were carrying the dogs under their arms, looking forward so they could evidently enjoy the shopping experience. Imagine my surprise when I realized I had been (thankfully) successfully avoiding a trail of potty that was being deposited by the backside of the pooch I was following down the aisle.

The majority of students are 'left behind'
Both No Child Left Behind and Common Core are the nation’s desperate attempts to improve our public education system. Self-serving administrators, as well as teachers and their unions opt for unaccountability by feigning ‘problems’ with these programs. They claim, for instance, that ‘Nobody tells us (districts) what to do’! while making little effort to improve public schools from year to year. Therefore, district ‘leadership’ keeps their jobs not as a result of schools’ performance, but by guaranteeing that their teachers will not be held accountable for inadequately educating our kids.
Education funding bill showed big differences
One of the most important issues our state legislators are asked to address every year is the education of our children. As conservatives, we believe this is as it should be. Education is better addressed by the state and by local school districts, rather than a far-off federal government. Local communities get to make sure that their values are reflected in the way their children are schooled and the things they learn.

Natural solutions for tendonitis
Tendonitis is inflammation of a tendon, the fibrous structure that connects muscle to bone. Usually, tendonitis stems from excessive or abnormal activity that leads to chronic irritation, and it most commonly occurs in the shoulder, wrist, thumb, ankle, and elbow. The principal symptoms are pain and tenderness that are aggravated by movement of the affected area. While acute treatment for the inflamed tendon is necessary, long-term prevention must also be considered.

Super Bowl Sunday and domestic violence: Not just a coincidence
I have struggled with whether or not to publish this article as it addresses some unpleasant truths. My goal in writing these articles, in a positive manner, is to educate the community on some legal issues that can affect families, businesses and possibly the community so that people can become proactive in their situation. They are not to be misconstrued as legal advice, as that would require any lawyer to first examine the specific facts of each individual’s situation. Revisiting my goal thus governs my decision to address the issue of domestic violence. That being said, here goes.
Just show up
My 82-year-old father Tony amazes me. He is a strong, determined Italian man who just finished 35 days of radiation treatment for oral cancer at the end of 2015. Honestly, he is a true hero, as all my patients are who endure such things. He is a retired dentist of all things, with internship work done over 50 years ago at Sloan Kettering, so he knows a thing or two about oral cancer. But now he is up close and personal with it. On and off for the last 12 years, my sweet Dad has fought like a trooper for his life, and for all of his childrens' and great-grandchildrens' lives.
Stop attacking yourself, part one
We are in a strange era. In no other time of humanity, have we been so technologically advanced. We can do some truly amazing things! But with all of our knowledge or theories, all that we have, all that we stake claims to excelling in, we fail to get a hold of runaway health deterioration. Let’s examine one of the most runaway of all health conditions: autoimmune disorders.

And like a lot of extended families we all connect in real time via Facebook, sharing photos and videos.

VERDICT: Justice for Johnny
This is in regards to the quote by Chief Public Defender John Adams stating, “I am heartbroken that yet again Eldon has been let down by adults that should have protected him” regarding the Samuel verdict. My take on things? It is an insult to the women and gentlemen who put their lives on hold to hear this heartbreaking case and who came to a unanimous decision. If anything, I feel Mr. Adams is the adult who let Samuel down.

VERDICT: Samuel deserves mercy

SCHOOL: Choice is critical
The right to choose the type of school I wish to attend is important to me. One reason it is important is because everyone has a different learning style. Some students enjoy going to a public school because they like the social interaction and they like to be taught daily by a teacher. They also like to be told what their schedule is every day. Then there are some kids who like to be at home to study and complete their work independently. These kids do not need to be in a very scheduled environment.

Embracing diversity
Diversity is a hot topic these days, but for most wine consumers it never really has been all that controversial. As regular readers know trying all the different wines we have available in North Idaho is my favorite part of the adventure. From the somewhat predictable and familiar big muscular California Cabernet to the light bodied and subtle French Beaujolais, to the esoteric Carménère and Bonarda of South America, they all have their place in the wine rack. In whites, I can embrace the full butter oak bomb Chardonnays all the way to the steely Gruner Veltliners and everything in-between. Producers from the New World appellations of the US, New Zealand Australia and South America, as well as those from the Old World like France, Italy, Hungary, Spain, and even those from the Middle East will all find their way into the shop.
