RATHDRUM — When David Schubert moved here from western Washington, he had a hard time finding books.

“I was obsessed with reading and loved going to libraries, but the library was too far away from my house," he said. "I wanted to make it easier for other kids in Rathdrum with the same problem to be able to have as much access to literature as possible,” Schubert said.

For his Eagle Scout project, he built four library boxes in Majestic, Stub Meyer, Roth and Thayer parks.

Rathdrum Trading Post and Ziggy's Home Improvement donated materials for the project, and his father, Daniel Osburn, helped design the boxes.

“It was a lot of trial and error, but we made a design and they turned out really well,” Schubert said.

People are now able to visit the parks and check out books from each of the boxes, but there’s still a final touch Schubert is hoping to add soon.

Vinyl stickers saying “take a book, leave a book” will mark the completion of the project.

A new little library box now hosts books for kids in Roth Park as the result of an Eagle Scout project by David Schubert.
