COEUR d’ALENE — In a match that Lake City coach Corey Owen said could have gone either way, it was the early momentum that proved to be just enough on senior night Tuesday.
Lake City’s Matthew Whitcomb pinned Reuben Thill in 3:42 at 182 pounds, one of five pins on the night in a 45-40 win over the Lewiston Bengals.
“That match at 182 was a huge match,” Owen said. “Matt’s the No. 2 kid in the state wrestling the No. 3 (Thill), and he really got the momentum going for us and out on the right foot.”
Owen Hughes (285 pounds), Zach Macdonald (98), Caden Hess (120) and Porter Howard (160) had pins for Lake City.
“We pretty much won the matches we could,” said Owen, who bumped Hess to 120 from his normal spot at 113 in the lineup due to illness for Lake City. “There was a method about moving Caden up until my 106-pounder (Blaine Leonard) was sick. Both him and my 132 (Kenzie Lindsey) were home sick, but the kids found a way to get it done, which was great to see.”
Lake City is off until the 5A Region 1 tournament on Feb. 22 at Lakeland High in Rathdrum.

RATHDRUM — At any point in the next three weeks, the season could end suddenly for Lakeland senior Ryan Quimby.
It really could have ended before the season even started for him.
Quimby, who suffered a torn left ACL during the summer, was re-injured in the first period, but fought back to pin Caleb Miller at 160 pounds to secure a dual win over the Tigers at Lakeland High.
“Ryan knows it could happen again at any point in the season,” Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute said. “But he’s going to try to go the distance and fight through the pain. He’s just going with the flow and trying to contribute and compete to the best of his ability and reach his own goals.”
Lucas Williams (132 pounds), Riley Siegford (138), Matt Foley (145), Rhonin Edwards (152) and Colton Boettcher (170) also had pins for Lakeland on the night.
“Our guys were a little frustrated and giving up pins where we shouldn’t have,” Edelblute said. “We knew going into this dual it was going to be tough and knew we matched up really well with them where we were really strong. Timberlake has a really good team.”
Josh Yanez (195), Ray Knerr (220) and Stryker Houston had pins for Timberlake.
