NIC WRESTLING: Cards go 2-2 in Oklahoma

MIAMI, Okla. — North Idaho College went 2-2 in the NJCAA Coaches Association Duals tournament on the campus of the Northeastern Oklahoma A&M on Friday, finishing fourth out of 15 teams.

“We found ways to win early on,” said NIC coach Mike Sebaaly, whose team hadn’t wrestled since Dec. 15. “Then we kind of had some rough stuff with weights, illness and were battling some things. It was not our best performance with the layoff and some illnesses.”

NIC beat Triton 32-14 and Ellsworth 19-17 to advance to the semifinals, where it lost to Iowa Western 22-18 and Western Wyoming 45-6 in the third-place match.

“We got a chance to see four teams from different parts of the country, which was good for us,” Sebaaly said. “It was great exposure for our guys as we move forward toward the national tournament.”

Larry Johnson, the Lakeland High product, went 3-1 in his first matches for NIC after suffering a torn ACL last season.

“Larry was really on fire and getting bonus points for us,” Sebaaly said. “He stepped in and did a really nice job for us.”

NIC will wrestle Cloud, Labette and Colby today at Northeastern Oklahoma.
