Courtesy photo On Aug. 13 and 14, Spirit Lake residents Mike “Ziggy” Siegfried, 58, and Alannah Winland, 12, competed in the Long Beach International Karate Tournament — one of the largest tournaments on the West Coast — and won first place in every division they entered. In total they brought home four gold medals, a black belt trophy and a grand championship ring. Siegfried and Winland were the only competitors in the tournament representing Idaho. “Karate is really about becoming a more compassionate, empathetic and respectfully confident person,” said Siegfried. Added Winland, “Win or lose, I love to train and to compete. I can’t wait for our next tournament in Portland this November.”
