In an amazing feat of aerial navigation, Australian explorer George Hubert Wilkins as navigator and American Ben Eielson piloting their Lockheed Vega were the first to fly over the Arctic from Point Barrow, Alaska, to Spitsbergen, Norway, in April 1928, the flight taking 20 hours.
