Anglers may start registering this week for a Sept. 14 kokanee derby on Lake Coeur d’Alene sponsored by Fins and Feathers Tackle Shop and Guide Service.
The cost of the derby is $25 per participant and prizes will be awarded depending on the number of entries.
Kokanee in Lake Coeur d’Alene have been sizeable, many of them pushing 16 inches, said Jordan Smith of Fins and Feathers, so this year is a good time to start a blueback derby.
“A lot of people have been wanting to do it, so we thought we might as well start one this year,” Smith said. He didn’t think the lake has had a kokanee derby, at least not in recent history.
“I have not heard of one,” he said.
The derby will run between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. from the Higgens Point launch, and if it has a good following, will likely become an annual event, Smith said.
