PREP BASKETBALL: Trojans grind past Gonzaga Prep; Viks, T-Wolves fall

POST FALLS — It was a night were everything was earned at The Arena. 

Connor Carver had 20 points and nine rebounds, Tyras Blake added 10 points and 10 rebounds for Post Falls in a 51-45 win over the Gonzaga Prep Bullpups on Friday night. 

“It was a high-level defensive game,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “No basket was easily given. We’ve got all the respect for Gonzaga Prep and we try to model what we do by them. I was proud of our guys for getting into a rugged, half-court game and challenging each pass. Nothing was easy tonight, and I was proud of our guys.” 

Post Falls (3-3) travels to Ferris today at 2 p.m., for the Trojans third game in as many days. 

Hudson Floyd scored 15 points for Gonzaga Prep (3-1).

MERIDIAN — The Huskies of Sacramento rallied from a nine-point deficit in the closing moments, taking the lead on free throws by Chadwick Johnson with 4.5 seconds remaining to beat the Vikings in a semifinal game in the Pro Image Holiday Classic at Owyhee High. 

“It was really a back and forth game,” said Coeur d’Alene coach Jon Adams, whose team led 32-23 at halftime. “We did a good job on Chadwick Johnson, but they had a sophomore (Baron Sabir) that got hot that wasn’t on our radar and he hurt us.” 

Coeur d’Alene (3-1) will face Southridge of Beaverton, Ore., today to conclude the tournament at 11 a.m. PST. The Vikings were scheduled to face Lake City, but both Adams and Lake City coach James Anderson agreed to swap opponents should both move into the third-place game. 

Sabir scored 23 points for Sheldon (3-1), which faces Owyhee in the championship game today.

NINE MILE FALLS, Wash. — Junior Brayden Carrel had 19 points and 12 rebounds, and the visiting Hawks gave Caleb De Fabiis his first victory as Lakeland coach with the nonleague win over the Eagles. 

Junior Jaron Yager added 12 points and five rebounds, and Peyton Hillman hit three 3s for nine points for Lakeland (1-3), who outscored Lakeside 25-4 in the fourth quarter.  

“We won that game with our defense,” De Fabiis said. “Jace Taylor is our leader on that end of the floor, and he takes a ton of pride in whoever he’s matched up with.” 

Lakeside is 2-2. 

Lakeside plays host to Lake City on Tuesday.

“We got off to a good start, but turned it over a bit too much in the second quarter,” said Kellogg coach Mike Martin, whose team led 16-6 after the first quarter. “They cut it to 24-23, but we responded really well after that. Our resiliency was good to see tonight.” 

Radley McDonald scored 13 points, Ty Cheney had nine points and nine rebounds for Kellogg (2-2), which hosts Priest River on Thursday. 

Spencer Farrell and Dylan Tosh scored nine points each for Genesis Prep (2-4), which travels to Bonners Ferry on Tuesday.

COEUR d’ALENE — Senior Preston SpottedHorse had 25 points and 13 assists, Hallah Peone 19 points, eight rebounds and nine assists for the Knights in a nonleague win over the Saints at Holy Family Catholic School. 

“I was pleased with the effort and the win,” said Lakeside coach James Twoteeth, whose was without Tyson Charley and Dre’don Sines, who were suspended two games each for playing outside of school sports. “It could have been a blessing in disguise with having to have other kids step up. We had to have other kids step up and score and I was happy to see that.” 

Jadin Pluff scored 19 points for Lakeside (3-1), which travels to Wallace today. 

Ben Connelly scored 23 points, Grant Clemens 17 for Coeur du Christ (2-2), which travels to Bonners Ferry next Thursday.

“There were a lot of big shots made by both teams,” Lake City coach David Pratt said. “Both teams played hard and both teams got up and down the floor. They had a shot at the end, but missed and we were able to get out with a win. I’m proud of our kids. They fought really hard.” 

Senior Sadie Zimmerman scored 16 points, Fagan 11 for Lake City (6-4), which hosts Timberlake on Tuesday.

“It was a really physical game,” Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. “Both teams fought hard on the defensive end. We were pretty shorthanded by the end of the game with two players getting hurt, but I was really happy with our effort and intensity.” 

Jozee MacArthur scored 10 points for Timberlake (8-0), which faces Ronan today at Frenchtown High.
