PREP BASKETBALL: Vikings shoot past Sandpoint girls

COEUR d’ALENE — Sophomore Brookeslee Colvin led five Coeur d’Alene players in double-figures with 18 points as the Vikings beat the Sandpoint Bulldogs 76-55 in an Inland Empire League game at Viking Court on Tuesday. 

Freshman Lexi Wheeler scored 14 points, junior Natalie Semprimoznik 12 points, junior Karisa Wallis and senior Kelsey Carroll 10 points each for Coeur d’Alene (5-3), which hosts Deer Park on Thursday. 

“Credit to Coeur d’Alene for how they shot tonight,” Sandpoint coach Will Love said. “They showed at the end of the season they can be one of the top teams in the state and have a good chance of playing for another state title.” 

Sophomore Jordyn Tomco scored 22 points for Sandpoint (3-2), which travels to West Valley of Spokane on Monday.

COEUR d’ALENE — Senior Sadie Zimmerman scored 24 points and sophomore Macy Murphey hit 6 of 7 from the 3-point line for 21 points, leading the Timberwolves past the Scotties of Rockford, Wash., at Lake City High. 

“Both of them, all night long, hit some really timely shots,” said Lake City coach David Pratt, whose team finished with 14 3-pointers. “We were able to get out in transition and did a good job of taking care of the ball. We turned good defense into offense.” 

Lake City (5-4) travels to University of Spokane Valley on Friday. 

Taylee Phelps scored 28 points for Freeman (0-3).

MOSCOW — Junior Malia Miller scored 13 points for the Tigers in a nonleague win over the Bears at Bear Den. 

“The first half was just a struggle,” said Timberlake coach Matt Miller, whose team led 21-19 at halftime before outscoring the host school 27-18 in the second half. “We were really out of sorts, but calmed down in the second half and looked like ourselves a little bit. The kids battled hard and made enough plays to get a win.” 

Marissa Needs scored nine points for Timberlake (6-0), which hosts Grangeville on Thursday. 

Brooklyn Becker scored 11 points for Moscow (2-4).

KELLOGG — Dani Henrikson scored a game-high 19 points and 20 rebounds for the Wildcats in a nonleague win over the Jaguars at Andrews Gymnasium. 

“We were plagued by turnovers all game, and shots weren’t falling,” Kellogg coach Jana Nearing said. “It looked like we were a little tired from the game Monday night, but the effort and hustle was still there. I was proud of the no-quit attitude in all of the girls, even when things felt unorganized.” 

Jordyn Stutzke scored nine points for Kellogg (3-3), which competes in the Freeman Christmas Tournament Dec. 27-28 in Rockford, Wash. 

Summer Nelke scored nine points for Genesis Prep (3-3), which travels to Kootenai tonight.

RATHDRUM — Junior Caden Symons scored 24 points, 12 in the third quarter for the Vikings in an Inland Empire League win over the Hawks at Hawk Court. 

“Caden did a really good job of being assertive and got to the basket,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jon Adams said. “It was really good to see us apply a lot of pressure in the half court. Lakeland’s got some great size, but our guys were able to battle with them inside.” 

Carter Rupp scored 10 points for Coeur d’Alene (2-0), which faces Madison in the opening round of the Pro Image Holiday Classic at Owyhee High in Meridian.

SPOKANE — Junior Connor Carver tied the game on a layup with 28 seconds remaining for the Trojans, who fell short to the Wolfpack in overtime. 

“As a coaching staff, we’ve got to do a better job of getting them in position to finish games out,” said Post Falls coach Mike McLean, whose team has lost three of four games by a combined 11 points. “We’re not into moral victories, but need to do a better job of not digging holes early. We’re doing enough to make these games tight, but we’re fouling too much and not executing well enough to win these games yet.” 

Tyras Blake scored 23 points for Post Falls (1-3), which travels to Ridgeline on Thursday.

“Lucas hit some big shots down the stretch for us tonight,” Timberlake coach Mike LaFountaine said. “The guys did a good job down the stretch. Wallace is a good team and they shot the ball really well.” 

Cooper Miller scored 17 points, Julian Davis 16 points for Wallace (2-3), which hosts Kootenai on Thursday.

ST. MARIES — The host Lumberjacks cut the deficit to 27-17 before the Badgers closed the first half on a 7-0 run in the nonleague game at St. Maries High. 

“They kind of took the wind out of us,” St. Maries coach Bryan Chase said. “That kind of took the momentum from us a little. But it’s always good to play a defending state champion to see where you’re at and what it takes to get there.” 

Jack Barta hit three 3-pointers for St. Maries (2-3), which hosts Grangeville on Saturday. 

Asher Williams scored 23 points for Bonners Ferry (4-0), which travels to Logos of Moscow on Thursday.
