Christmas has come to Athol

ATHOL — Christmas magic wasn’t hard to find at the Athol Community Center on Saturday night.

Children danced to all the Christmas classics as the adults warmed their hands around fires and caught up with friends and neighbors.

Three-year-old Anastasia only stopped her twirls around the Christmas tree to watch in wonder as Santa Claus pulled away from the park with Timberlake Fire Protection District.

“Bye, Santa! Bye, Santa!” the toddler shouted.

Over 100 people gathered Saturday night for Athol’s Tree Lighting event, which also included miniature horse rides, games and Christmas carols.

It was the perfect opportunity for the tight-knit community to come together and welcome the holiday season.

“We wanted to do something fun for the kids. We wanted them to see the magic of community and all the pretty lights!” said Athol resident Kaila Mayabb.

People from other North Idaho communities also joined in the festivities.

“This is how we feel connected to the community,” said Krissy Shoemaker from Spirit Lake.

Of course, Santa Claus himself also made an appearance. Kids squealed in delight as they waited their turn to share their Christmas wishes with the Big Man himself.

For Leilani Shoemaker, the Santa sighting was the highlight of her night.

“Santa coming was probably my favorite part,” Leilani said. “But I haven’t told him what I want yet.”

With today marking only the first of December, Leilani still has some time before the big day.

    Children and parents alike were delighted as the tree at the Athol Community Center lit up Saturday night.
