Unfortunately as we age, our bodies go through a lot of changes. Loss of vision, hearing, flexibility, mobility and cognitive abilities are just a few. It’s no wonder why depression is a challenge facing seniors.

The fact is that our aging population is definitely increasing. So more research is being directed toward seniors. Research has revealed that cultural engagement, things like social interaction, things to stimulate cognitive thinking and physical activity can help alleviate symptoms of depression in older adults.

April  2019 issue of British Journal of Psychiatry, published a study that stated, “Cultural engagement and incident depression in older adults: evidence from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing,” investigated if these same activities could help prevent depression from setting in, in the first place. They examined data collected from over 2,100 adults in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing who did not have depression and followed them for over a decade. They gathered information regarding the frequency of participation in cultural activities (such as going to a movie, museum or theatre) as well as the development, or not, of depression.

Unfortunately, there are some changes that are out of our control when it comes to aging, but luckily there are also many things that individuals can do to help reduce the impact of those changes. It is extremely important to keep moving and remain engaged in life.

There are a number of activities and opportunities for those looking to increase their physical activity as well. Parks or even the mall are a great place to connect with other people, while getting some exercise as you walk around. Volunteering is a great way to engage with other members of your community. Plus, you can check out your local senior center for activities. There are many activities you can join with others in the same life season and with similar interests.

Keeping up with your physical health is only one part of aging. You must take steps to preserve your mental and emotional health as well. If you have concerns about what physical activities you should avoid, talk to your doctor. Ask about activities that you are physically able to do considering your personal level of health, as well as any stretches or exercises that you can do to help prevent injuries.

Being proactive when it comes to your health can help you not only feel good, but also give you the freedom to relax and enjoy the company of others, while you create new experiences and enjoy life to its fullest.
