VETERANS DAY: Should be every day
Recently my daughter suggested I look into Newby-ginnings in Post Falls as a place I could volunteer. Newby-ginnings of North Idaho, Inc. was created in October 2013 in honor and memory of SPC Nicholas Newby who was killed in action in Baghdad, Iraq on July 7, 2011.
My wife and I visited and discovered an incredible place that exists solely to help our local vets. Clothes, small kitchen appliances, furniture, lamps, towels, bed linens, cookware, bakeware, flatware, dishes, medical supplies, books, toys for kids, food - you name it, Newby-ginnings has it in their huge thrift store. A military-related ID card for all active duty, veterans and Gold Star families is required for admission to a warehouse full of whatever essential things you need to help you in your life. This comes without any charges for that assistance, and without any financial vetting. If you need help dealing with local, state and federal agencies, or if you just want camaraderie with fellow vets, you can find that, too. If you have documented military experience and need help, Newby-ginnings is there for you.
On a different note, Newby-ginnings is a registered 501c(3), so donations can be claimed on your taxes. Donations can be the stuff you really don’t need in your house any longer, or food or cash. Several local stores support the effort, and you can, too.
Finally, consider becoming a volunteer in this unique facility. The 30+ people who work in the facility are all volunteers. Come out and help.
