VETERANS MONTH: On the books, but not promoted

| June 28, 2023 1:00 AM

I stand corrected, almost. Being a Vietnam veteran 68-69, I never knew the month of May was dedicated to veterans. In fact many of my peers did not know this. So after the comments, I looked it up.

“Senator John McCain proposed the month-long observance on February 9, 1999. On May 30, 1999, Congress designated National Military Appreciation Month as a month-long observance. Congress chose May because many military related observances such as Memorial Day and Loyalty Day are celebrated and observed on that date.”

I never heard of Loyalty Day, “That the 1st day of May of each year is hereby designated as Loyalty Day and is to be set aside as a special day for the reaffirmation of loyalty to the United States of America and inviting the people of the United States to observe such day, in schools and other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies. Approved July 18, 1958.”

So you are somewhat right. I do not recall any ceremonies in all of my school years, nor do I recall any ceremonies from the White House on May 1. Possibly at 75 years old my memory has faded.

I do recall the president having a special day at the White House for a special group and some topless people. I do recall their special flag draped in-between the U.S. flag at the White House. I do recall an endless promotion of their special month.

I do not recall an endless promotion of Military Pride Month in the month of May for any year in the past.
