PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Lake City shoots past Boise in opener, in rematch of last year's state 5A semifinal
COEUR d’ALENE — As Lake City coach James Anderson explained, they got better just by playing on Friday night.
Junior Sophia Zufelt scored a team-high 22 points for the Timberwolves, who held off the Boise Brave 73-62 in the season opener for both on Friday night.
“We did some really good stuff offensively in the first half,” said Anderson, whose team led 42-27 at halftime. “We had a lot of good things going.”
Lake City fell to Boise 45-25 in a state 5A semifinal game last year. The Timberwolves bounced back the next day to beat Rigby in the third-place game.
Boise cut the deficit to 66-61 with 1:30 remaining on a pair of free throws by Avery Howell, but Zufelt iced the game from the foul line, scoring the Timberwolves final six points from the free throw line.
“Boise played great in the first quarter and I thought they did a good job of playing with pace,” Anderson said. “How they played is where we’re trying to be and it was good to play at that pace. This game will only make us better because we’ve got something on film to work on and build on from this.”
Howell finished with 28 points for Boise, which visits Lewiston today.
Kamryn Pickford had 18 points for Lake City, which hosts Mountain View today.
Mountain View beat Lewiston 59-51 on Friday.
