NIC ROUNDUP: No. 1 Clackamas tops No. 6 NIC

COEUR d’ALENE — North Idaho College freshman Sal Silveria believes he’s the best in the country.
After a quick wakeup, his teammates almost proved it to the top team in the NJCAA nation.
Silveria won his bout at 141 pounds against Marckis Brandford by a 20-4 major decision, but Clackamas — the top-ranked team in the NJCAA — held off the sixth-ranked Cardinals 25-19 at Christianson Gymnasium on Friday.
“Sam believes he can beat anyone in the country,” said NIC interim coach Chase Clasen, who took over the program after previous coach Mike Sebaaly was named the school’s interim president on Nov. 10. “He had no mental or physical breaks between the entire match and I look forward to seeing his continued improvement throughout the season.”
As the match began, Brandford was deducted a point for slapping Silveria in the face.
“The rivalry between our two teams brings a certain level of intensity that makes both of our teams better,” Clasen said. “I’m excited for the rest of our season and our future matches.”
Navarro Nanpuya (174), Devin Winston (184) and Cohle Feliciano (285) also had wins for NIC on the night.
“I was extremely impressed with the way those guys won,” Clasen said. “Those guys aren’t just looking to win. They’re looking to dominate, which is something we preach. Our guys that lost are remaining positive, and are eager to work on the small details and get better.”
Isaac Lopez, who wrestled at NIC as a freshman two years ago, won at 133 for Clackamas.
NIC competes in the Spokane Open on Sunday starting at 9 a.m. at the Spokane Convention Center.
