Coeur d'Alene fends off upstart Lakeland

RATHDRUM — In a matchup of one of the top teams in 5A and the leader of the 4A Inland Empire League, the 5A Coeur d’Alene Vikings won the last two sets in thrilling fashion to defeat the Lakeland Hawks 25-19, 22-25, 25-23, 29-27 in nonleague play Thursday night at Hawk Court.

Taylin Rowley had 14 kills, Elly Schraeder 12 kills and four blocks for Coeur d’Alene (10-3), still missing two starters due to injuries. Lauren Phillips had 19 assists, 14 digs and one ace, Courtney Garwood 16 assists, Maggie Bloom 16 digs, Lauryn Fuller three blocks. Rowley, Garwood and Madi Symons had one ace each.

Daphne Carroll had 19 kills and four aces for Lakeland (8-3). Katy Ryan had 17 kills and five blocks, Abbey Neff 36 assists, Olivia Cooper 23 digs, Keely DeVore five aces.

“We played hard tonight against a great team,” Lakeland coach Kelsie Badger said. “We fought for every point. We fought back every time we were down to catch back up. I’m really proud of our girls and how hard they worked tonight.”

Coeur d’Alene plays host to Eagle tonight at 7. Lakeland is home vs. Lake City on Tuesday.

Post Falls

LEWISTON — Maya Blake and Brielle Nagel had 11 kills each for the visiting Trojans, who fell to the Bengals 25-22, 25-21, 22-25, 25-19 in 5A Inland Empire League play at Booth Hall.

Kassie Gardiner had 18 assists, Ali Carpenter 18 digs for Post Falls (7-6, 0-3 5A IEL). Brooklyn Minden had five aces, Kamden Fiddes four blocks.

“We struggled with our ball control tonight,” Post Falls coach Matt Barkley said. “I thought our net play was improved. Kamden and Emily (Schlothauer) did a good job of putting up a solid block against Lewiston’s strong middles.”

Lewiston is 1-1 in league.

Post Falls travels to western Washington for the Kent Classic on Saturday.

St. Maries

ST. MARIES — Sami Wilfong had eight kills and 11 assists as the Tigers swept the Lumberjacks 25-18, 25-17, 25-20 in nonleague play.

Brooke Jessen had eight kills and four aces for Timberlake (7-9). Taylor Suko had six kills, two blocks and 12 digs, and Jaycee Pratt had 15 assists and 12 digs.

For St. Maries (0-9), Allie Brebner had 16 digs, Shelby Martin five kills, Mackenzie Hammond 13 assists and an ace, Kirsten Miller one block.

Timberlake hosts a tri-match with Kellogg and Eagle on Saturday. St. Maries returns to action next Thursday at Kellogg.

Bonners Ferry

COEUR d’ALENE — Megan MacKinney totaled nine kills, 12 assists and eight aces for the Panthers, who responded after dropping the first set to beat the Badgers 19-25, 25-16, 25-18, 28-26 in Intermountain League play at Holy Family Catholic School.

Maddie Kociela added seven kills and three blocks for Coeur d’Alene Charter (5-2, 1-2 IML). Rae Kendra had six kills and five aces, Rylee Peterson five kills.

“We ended up passing pretty well at the end. But we definitely struggled early,” Charter coach Cindy Beyer said.

Reese Lund had 10 kills for Bonners Ferry (0-2 IML). Grace Villelli added eight assists, Lexi Maas 17 digs, Kae Dodge three aces, Victoria Rae six blocks.

Coeur d’Alene Charter plays North Idaho Christian tonight at 5:30 at Holy Family.

Kootenai

HARRISON FLATS — Kria Peters totaled 18 assists, and served 10 straight points in the second set as the visiting Knights beat the Warriors 25-18, 25-11, 25-17 in North Star League play.

Glory Olson added seven kills and two aces for Lakeside (4-2, 2-1 NSL). Tenley Lambert had five digs, Nicole Middleton two aces.

“We played with a little more enthusiasm tonight,” Lakeside coach Brad Veile said. “We are working on being a little more aggressive, and that is starting to show through. We passed a whole lot better than we have in previous matches.”

Lakeside plays host to North Idaho Christian on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Kootenai (1-4, 0-3) visits Clark Fork on Tuesday.

POST FALLS — Kylee Ficken’s goal in the 10th minute stood up as the host Trojans edged the Hawks in nonleague play.

Post Falls (2-3-2) is 2-0-1 in its last three matches.

“So proud of how well the girls have turned things around,” Post Falls coach Steve Mills said. “Tonight they showed a lot of character. You could tell that they were still feeling the effects of Tuesday’s game (a scoreless tie at Coeur d’Alene) where they played a man down, but they found a way to win. Excellent performance by Morgan Rust, Katelyn Jesienouski, Kayla Walters and Kaysha Walton. They did a great job keeping things away from our goal.”

On Saturday, Lakeland plays host to St. Maries, and Post Falls visits Lewiston.
